Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, was established on 1st December, 1985 with the objective to promote education, research and extension education in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines. Late Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradesh perceived the importance of Horticulture and Forestry to develop and improve the State economy which led to the establishment of this University. Its history lies in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College, Solan, established in 1962 and affiliated to the Panjab University. It became one of the campuses of Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University on its formation in 1970. Consequent upon the establishment of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978, this campus became its Horticulture Complex and finally in 1985, assumed the status of a State University, being the only University in the country engaged exclusively in teaching, research and extension in Horticulture and Forestry. The University is located at Nauni in Solan District of Himachal Pradesh, 13 km from Solan on Solan-Rajgarh Road, at an elevation of 1300 metres above mean sea level. Solan town is situated on national highway (NH-22) and is well connected by train and bus services. The University has four constituent colleges, out of which, two are located at the main campus Nauni, one for horticulture and the other for forestry, having 9 and 7 departments, respectively. The third College i.e., College of Horticulture & Forestry is located at Neri in Hamirpur District on Nadaun-Hamirpur state highway, about 6 Km from Hamirpur town and is well connected with bus service. The college offers three Undergraduate Degree Programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry and B. Tech. Biotechnology and MSc degree programme in a few subjects. The fourth college i.e. College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag (Mandi) is located at Thunag District Mandi. This college offer BSc (Hons.) Horticulture and BSc (Hons.) Forestry degree programme. In addition, there are five Regional Research Stations, 12 Satellite Stations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different zones of the State.

    STUDY OF BUSINESS MODEL OF POTATO CROP IN UNA DISTRICT OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

    This present study examined the Business Model of Potato cultivation in Una district of Himachal Pradesh, based on the responses of a diverse sample of 60 respondents. The primary data was collected through questionnaire method. The key components of Business canvas model such as key partners, key suppliers, key resources, key activities, distribution channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, and pricing tactics were studied. The result suggested that key partners were fellow farmers and family members .The key suppliers were private seed companies. Labor and seed costs are the most significant expenses, playing a critical role in potato cultivation. The proper use of inputs and resource utilization are highlighted as key activities, essential for successful crop production. Wholesale buyers and local people are the main customer, while good quality products and competitive pricing influence customer payments. The study suggests promoting gender inclusivity, emphasizing education and skill development, improving marketing and customer relations, exploring value-added products, optimizing costs, collaborations and partnerships, and promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness. By adopting the suggested improvements, farmers can steer the industry towards greater success, profitability, and environmental consciousness. In conclusion, this study provides a detailed overview of the potato cultivation business model in Una District, Himachal Pradesh.

    ANALYSIS OF SOIL HEALTH CARD SCHEME IN KANGRA DISTRICT OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

    The present study entitled “Analysis of Soil Health Card Scheme in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh” has been conducted to know the level of awareness among farmers regarding soil health card scheme, motivating factors for adoption of soil health card scheme and constraints faced in the use of soil health card scheme. The present study was conducted in the Kangra District purposively. Samples of 110 farmers were taken randomly from five villages. Various questions were asked from the farmers through a pre- structured questionnaire. The studies revealed that majority of the farmers response were partial aware about the soil health card scheme. Lack of knowledge about method of collecting ideal soil sample, no soil testing laboratory in nearby area and difficulty in calculating fertilizer dose on the basis of nutrient status of soil were the major problems reported and taken under the study. The study concluded, farmer should be trained to take a soil sample of its own farm, establishment of soil testing laboratory near the local area were the major recommendations suggested by the farmers to overcome the constraints while implementing the scheme.

    CONSUMERS’ INTENTION AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS ONLINE SHOPPING OF FRESH VEGETABLES AND FRUITS IN SELECTED DISTRICTS OF TAMIL NADU

    The present study focuses on Consumers’ Intention and Attitude towards Online Shopping of Fresh Vegetables and Fruits in selected districts of Tamil Nadu. Exploratory cum descriptive design was adopted in the study. Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu state was selected purposely for the study. A total of 100 respondents were constituted as a sample for the survey. The study examined the awareness of the consumers on online shopping of fresh vegetables and fruits, which will help businesses and researchers understand the current state of the market, identify barriers to adoption and develop effective strategies to promote and enhance the online shopping experience for fresh produce. The study shows how socioeconomic and demographic factors, including age, gender, education, income, employment status and family type influence consumers’ preferences for online shopping of fresh vegetables and fruits. The findings reveal that individuals within the age range of 25-50 years, females, those with higher income levels and individuals with higher educational qualifications exhibit a stronger inclination to choose online stores for purchasing fresh vegetables and fruits compared to other respondents. The main findings of the study indicated that free home delivery was the most valued factor considered by consumers for making online purchases. In addition, it was found that the majority of the respondents showed a negative attitude towards online shopping of fresh vegetables and fruits.

    ADOPTION OF INTEGRATED FARMING SYSTEM: A STUDY OF MANDI DISTRICT, HIMACHAL PRADESH

    This study investigates the adoption of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, India. The objectives of the study were to assess the awareness, perception, and factors influencing the adoption of IFS among farmers. Convenience and snowball sampling techniques were used to reach out sample size of 110 respondents. The study identified varying levels of awareness among farmers regarding different aspects of IFS, such as soil health improvement, government subsidies, and resource recycling. Farmers exhibited high awareness regarding certain integrated farming systems involving crop production and livestock rearing. Positive perceptions were observed towards IFS, with farmers recognizing its potential to increase income and provide balanced nutritious food. Factors influencing farmers' decisions were categorized into production-oriented, situational, financial, market-oriented, and organizational factors. Organizational factors ranked as the most influential factors while situational factors ranked the lowest. Based on the findings, suggestions were provided to promote the adoption of IFS, including enhancing awareness programs, improving financial support mechanisms, supporting small and marginal farmers, strengthening extension services, and strengthening market linkages. These findings can contribute to promoting IFS adoption, sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods for farmers in the Mandi district.

    A STUDY ON PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF LITCHI IN MUZAFFARPUR DISTRICT OF BIHAR

    The study analyzes litchi cultivation in India, focusing on trends, challenges, and marketing dynamics. The study covers the period from 2011-12 to 2021-22 and provides insights for agricultural policymakers and stakeholders. The analysis reveals a gradual increase in litchi cultivation area, reaching 99.33 thousand hectares in 2021-22. Bihar leads in production, followed by West Bengal and Assam. Bihar shows consistent growth, while Assam also improves production levels. Comparing India and Bihar, Bihar demonstrates faster growth rates in the production area and productivity, albeit below the national average. The district-wise analysis highlights Muzaffarpur as a significant contributor, along with other districts displaying steady production. Socio-demographic profiles of participants indicate diverse characteristics in age, gender, education, occupation, family type, household size, and income levels. Participants primarily use Channel I for marketing, with direct sales to consumers being prevalent. Village traders, wholesalers, and retailers also play a role in the marketing process. Challenges faced by litchi farmers include fluctuating demand, seedling availability, fertilizer shortages, labour availability, pest and disease attacks, inadequate infrastructure, limited market information, and conflicts with traders. This research provides valuable insights into litchi cultivation trends, challenges, and marketing dynamics, aiding decision-making for policymakers and stakeholders to improve the litchi farming sector's productivity and profitability.

    A STUDY OF BUSINESS MODEL OF APPLE CROP IN CHAUPAL TESHIL OF DISTRICT SHIMLA

    This project work presents a study of the business model of the apple crop in Chaupal Tehsil, Himachal Pradesh, using the Osterwalder canvas as a framework. The research explores customer segments, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, and key partnerships involved in the apple industry. The investigation involves collecting primary data through structured questionnaires administered to apple farmers. Key findings highlight that key partners, such as labor and suppliers, play crucial roles in the ecosystem. Moreover, orchard management and planning are significant activities in the apple growing business. The value proposition focuses on providing good quality products and effective packaging for commission agents, wholesale distributors, and retailers. Customer relationships are emphasized through customer information gathering and feedback collection. Revenue streams primarily come from the sale of apple crops and saplings, utilizing flexible supply and demand-based pricing in APMC's and competitor/farmer-based pricing strategies. Implementing the study's suggestions can enhance the business model's sustainability and profitability for apple cultivation in Chaupal Tehsil.

    PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF VEGETABLE PRODUCE UNDER PRAKRITIK KHETI KHUSHAL KISAN YOJANA IN DISTRICT KANGRA, HIMACHAL PRADESH

    The study has highlighted the Production and Marketing aspects of Vegetable Produce under Prakritik Kheti Khushal Kisan Yojana in District Kangra of Himachal Pradesh with the help of structured questionnaire. In order to gain an overview a sample size of 120 respondents were reached out through convenience sampling. It was observed that majority of farmers are not aware about the components of Natural Farming. The study reveals that a significant portion of the farmer's expenses is allocated to acquiring certified seeds and plant materials, while the labor component is the least costly engagement, indicating that most farmers undertake fieldwork themselves. Furthermore, the analysis highlights the economic benefits farmers receive under the PKKKY program, focusing on cost reduction, pest and disease management, and market value. The study suggests Form Farmer Cooperatives or Partnerships, Improved Access to Knowledge and Technical Assistance, Improved Access to Certified Seed and Plant Material and Focus on Promoting and Educating Farmers regarding components of PKKKY etc. These insights can be used in improving the Production and Marketing of Vegetable Produce of the farmers who are involved in Natural Farming.

    A STUDY ON PRODUCT-MARKET ORIENTATION AND INTERACTION INTENSITY OF MEMBERS IN FARMER PRODUCER ORGANISATIONS (FPOs) IN HIMACHAL PRADESH

    The study on Product-Market Orientation and Interaction Intensity of Members in Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Himachal Pradesh has mainly focused on to understand the awareness of workers in reference to the Product-Market orientation dealt with FPOs, further the study has also effectively evaluated FPO members interaction intensity in reference to marketing activities and has identified the marketing issues and challenges faced by the FPOs. The study has mainly highlighted that marketing resources and assistance have been identified as critical elements impacting marketing awareness, indicating that FPOs should prioritize these components in order to empower their members. Further it as also suggested through the finding of the study that providing targeted initiatives and incentives for young people to enter agriculture and take up leadership roles within FPOs will help safeguard the future of the industry, and FPOs should concentrate on engaging and educating younger farmers as well. FPOs should implement regular and comprehensive training programs to continuously update farmers' knowledge and skills.

    The study entitled "Study of Business Models of Wheat Crop in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh" provided an over view of the business model adopted by the farmers of the selected area. Primary data consisting of 60 respondents was collected through questionnaire method. The study's findings were presented in the form of a Business Model Canvas consisting of key components. The canvas comprised of key partners such as universities/research institutions, family members etc., key resources such as seeds, fertilizers etc., distribution channel such as farmer to consumer (direct sale), customer segments such as local people and various other components. The study suggests promoting cooperative societies/FPOs, providing soil testing services, exploring value added products, diversifying the customer base, diversifying marketing channels and training farmers to secure better deals. This study gains valuable insights by taking into account the viewpoints and experiences of the surveyed farmers. These insights can be used to improve productivity, profitability, and sustainability in wheat cultivation in Kangra District.
