Abstract
The study analyzes litchi cultivation in India, focusing on trends, challenges, and
marketing dynamics. The study covers the period from 2011-12 to 2021-22 and provides
insights for agricultural policymakers and stakeholders. The analysis reveals a gradual
increase in litchi cultivation area, reaching 99.33 thousand hectares in 2021-22. Bihar leads in
production, followed by West Bengal and Assam. Bihar shows consistent growth, while
Assam also improves production levels. Comparing India and Bihar, Bihar demonstrates
faster growth rates in the production area and productivity, albeit below the national average.
The district-wise analysis highlights Muzaffarpur as a significant contributor, along with
other districts displaying steady production. Socio-demographic profiles of participants
indicate diverse characteristics in age, gender, education, occupation, family type, household
size, and income levels. Participants primarily use Channel I for marketing, with direct sales
to consumers being prevalent. Village traders, wholesalers, and retailers also play a role in
the marketing process. Challenges faced by litchi farmers include fluctuating demand,
seedling availability, fertilizer shortages, labour availability, pest and disease attacks,
inadequate infrastructure, limited market information, and conflicts with traders. This
research provides valuable insights into litchi cultivation trends, challenges, and marketing
dynamics, aiding decision-making for policymakers and stakeholders to improve the litchi
farming sector's productivity and profitability.
