Abstract
The present investigation entitled Genetic diversity and diallel analysis studies in brinjal (Solanue L.) comprised of two sets of experiment, first relating to variability and genetic diversity with 40 diverse cultivars of brinjal and the second one was 6 x 6 complete diallel cross analysis for heterosis, combining ability and gene action studies. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the cultivars for all the 18 plant characters. The cultivar Aushay recorded the highest fruit yield per plant (1719.50 g) as well as estimated yeild (412.50 g/ha) and was found significantly superior to the check variety IMK. The other high yielding cultivars were AC.1 (393.75 q/ha) and PBR-91-1 (280.83 q/ha). The plant mortality due to wilt and fruit borer infestation was also found minimum in cultivars Aushay and AC.1. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was slightly higher in magnitude than the genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters. PCV and GCV were found high for fruit weight, yield per plant and fruit width.
