Abstract
In order to study productivity and profitability of pure vs mixed and intercropping of finger millet and black gram, an experiment was conducted in the Eastern section of the Ranchi Agricultural college farm , Kanke ,Ranchi under rainfed upland condition during the Kharif season (July –October ), 1983. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 10 treatments – taking pure, mixed and intercropping of both the crops in varying proportions. The treatments plot was sandy clay loam, poor in fertility and acidic in reaction. Among all the treatment of pure, mixed and intercropping, net profit under 10,6 and 4 rows of finger millet each alternating with 2 rows of black gram, seed mixture 83.3 per cent of finger millet and 16.7 per cent of black gram, alternate row of finger millet and black gram and black gram, alternate row of finger millet and black gram and seed mixture-66.7 cent of finger millet and 33.3 per cent of black gram were at par and only the first one showed superiority over the other treatments. Pure stand of black gram showed minimum net profit. However, when the amount of nitrogen added by black gram to the soil was calculated under different treatments, it was found maximum with pure stand of black gram, followed by alternate row of finger millet and black gram. Seed Mixture 50 per cent of each crop and 4 row of finger millet alternative with 2 rows of black gram added equal amount of nitrogen and thus ranked third position. The above results clearly indicates that from the view point of economic and addition of residual N to the soil for the benefit of the succeeding crop, 4 rows of finger millet alternating with2 row of black gram ought to be preferred under this region. Moreover, this is the result of single year and hence for the confirmation of the result the investigation needs to be repeated.
