Abstract
The present investigation on “Effectiveness of Packaging Materials and Storage Containers against Pulse Beetle (Callasobruchus chinensis L.)” was carried out by conducting a survey for the adoption of various pulse storage structure and packaging materials among 150 farmers of Udaipur district from 3 block viz. Bhindar, Girwa, Mavli and laboratory experiment by using various packaging materials and storage containers in association with silica (2%) at Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, MPUAT, Udaipur during 2020-2021. The detailed survey revealed that various storage structures and packaging materials like metallic khoti, metallic Peta, plastic drum, HDPE bags (katta), jute bags, metallic pepa (tin box), earthen pots (matka), cloth bags (jhola), steel pots (charu), bhukari and simple polythene were adopted for pulse storage by the farmers along with the pest management practices like dry neem leaves (7.33%); fumigation with Aluminum phosphide (6.67%), sun drying of grain (6.00%), layer of ash or sand on top of grains (2.00%) against pulse beetle (C. chinensis L.). The order of adoption recorded was metallic khoti > metallic peta > plastic drum > HDPE bags (katta) > jute bags > metallic pepa (tin box) > earthen pots (matka) > cloth bags (jhola) > steel pots (charu) > bhukari > simple polythene. Polythene bags with silica (2%) was found to be best effective treatment among various packaging materials against pulse beetle during storage having minimum oviposition (21.33); seed damage (3.33%) and weight loss (7.93%) followed by gunny bags with silica (2%) (35.66, 4.60% and 11.67%); cloth bags with silica (2%) (39.53, 6.10% and 13.19%); Polythene bags without silica (41.86, 6.66% and 15.09%); jute bags with silica (2%) (43.86, 8.53% and 15.12%); gunny bags without silica (97.73, 17.40% and 27.86%); cloth bags without silica (109.26, 22.26% and 31.54%) and jute bags without silica (143.53, 27.86% and 37.89%), respectively. Among various storage containers, plastic jars with silica (2%) was found to be best effective treatment against pulse beetle during storage having minimum oviposition (22.00); seed damage (3.62%) and weight loss (7.61%) followed by glass jars with silica (2%) (26.26, 4.71% and 9.30%); metal bins with silica (2%) (32.13, 5.56% and 11.38%); plastic jars without silica (44.26, 7.93% and 15.52%); earthen pots with silica (2%) (46.86, 8.89% and 15.59%); glass jars without silica (57.46, 9.33% and 17.59%); metal bins without silica (78.46, 13.06% and 22.97%) and earthen pots without silica (155.13, 29.73% and 42.30%), respectively.
