Abstract
The present study was undertaken to explore the entrepreneurial activities promoted by KVKs for economic empowerment of tribal women, to assess the knowledge and adoption of selected agro-based entrepreneurial activities by tribal women, to study constraints faced by tribal women in the adoption of entrepreneurial activities and economic empowerment of tribal women through KVKs. The study was conducted in Southern Rajasthan. Three KVKs viz. Banswara, Dungarpur and Udaipur were selected on the basis of highest concentration of tribal population. Four agro based entrepreneurial activities viz. goat farming, poultry production, vermicompost production and vegetable production were selected. From each of the three KVKs, 75 tribal women from the selected entrepreneurial activities were taken randomly to make a total sample of 225 respondents. Questionnaire and interview schedule were used to collect data. Frequency, percentage, mean percent scores, mean weighted scores, paired t test and F-test were used to analyze the data. Agro based entrepreneurial activities were promoted by KVKs through trainings, demonstrations, field visits, self-help groups and Farmer’s Producer Company. Findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents (71.55%) were from low socio-economic status. Regarding knowledge of tribal women it was found that majority of the respondents of goat farming and vermicompost production were in good knowledge category, whereas in poultry production and vegetable production, majority of the respondents were in average knowledge category and none of the respondent was in poor knowledge category. Regarding adoption it was found that all the respondents (100 per cent) of goat farming, poultry production and vermicompost production of all three KVKs were in high adoption category while all the 208 respondents of vegetable production were in high and medium adoption category and none of the respondents from all selected agro based entrepreneurial activity was in poor adoption category. Respondents faced mainly marketing and operational constraints in goat farming whereas financial, marketing and operational constraints were faced by the respondents in poultry production, vermicompost production and vegetable production. Regarding economic empowerment of tribal women, it was found that among the four enterprises vegetable production was found to be maximum profitable enterprise with overall annual income of Rs. 128,16,700 followed by vermicompost production (Rs.11,15,750), poultry production (Rs.7,52,200) and goat farming (Rs.3,11,233). Majority of the respondents were satisfied from their income as they were able to contribute in family expenditure. It was found that respondents were involved in decision making about economic matters and majority of them had good access and control over resources.
