Abstract
Leak is one of the major problems faced in the transportation of water, oil and gas through pipelines. To improve the efficiency of this system leak must be detected and located as early as possible to minimize the loss of the flowing commodity in the pipeline. Internal leak detection system is most commonly used technique which depends on sensing of the flow parameters such as velocity and pressure variation along the pipeline. And to detect leak on basis of change in this flow parameters. Therefore, there is a need to understand how this flow parameters behaves when leak occurs. In this project work numerical investigation is being carried out using CFD to understand how different flow parameters such as pressure, pressure gradient, leak mass flow rate and outlet velocity are affected due to change of size of leak, position of leak, orientation of leak and the temperature of the fluid in pipeline carrying water. The results obtained shows that there is huge fluctuation in pressure and pressure gradient at leak location which also changes the overall pressure drop and velocity at outlet of the pipe. The CFD was carried on ANSYS FLUENT.
