Abstract
Solar energy is very large inexhaustible, clean and green source of energy. Sun heat is an
effective system that harness the sun’s energy for family water heating needs. SWH system is
a simple technology given that it is easy to use and quite useful. Heating water is very
expensive as it requires a huge amount of energy. The present study was carried out to
evaluate the consumer behaviour regarding Domestic Solar Water Heater in Udaipur city. For
this purpose, list of dealers of Udaipur city who were involved in domestic solar water heater
selling for last 5 years or more was collected. From the available list of dealers their last 5
years annual sales of DSWH were recorded. On the basis of highest DSWH sales, four dealers
were selected and list of DSWH users was procured. From the available list of DSWH users,
80 women consumers in the age group of 25 to 60 years and using DSWH at least for last 2
years were selected as sample for the present investigation. Questionnaire was divided into
five sections dealing with consumers family background information, awareness and use of
DSWH, factors influencing use of DSWH, economic feasibility of DSWH, consumer
satisfaction and problems faced by the use of DSWH.
Findings of the study succinctly revealed that environmental, economic, health and social
benefits were the most important factors influencing consumers' choice of domestic solar
water heater. Its average payback period is 4 years. A solar water heater of 100 liters of
capacity can save 1866.26 Kgs of dry wood, 1354.84 kWh of electricity, 633.76 Kgs of coal
and 124.210 liters of gas. By saving the fossil fuels it reduces the carbon emissions in the
environment which will help in sustainable development. Social and print media plays
important role in popularizing this technology. There is an urgent need to educate people and
make them aware about the renewable energy technologies especially solar water heater
which will significantly benefit the country in reducing the peak demand on electricity grid
but also reduce the consumers’ long term energy costs. The study guides to invest on solar
energy efficient appliances which lower CO2 impact
