Abstract
Domestic work is one of the oldest and informal occupations for the women around
the world. Recently, demand of domestic workers is increasing day by day and one of
the important reasons behind this is dual earner family pattern. Women are engaged in
outside work so they want helping hand in their home. Domestic workers are
contributing very important role in our day to day life. But most of the workers come
from vulnerable group of the society. They were illiterate, poor, unskilled and low
paid. So they must be trained properly in domestic work. Capacity building program
is one of the approaches for improving their present capabilities at work or enhance
their employability potential to fetch more wages. Thus, in this study knowledge of
the domestic workers was assessed pertaining to their work profile, a training module
was developed and capacity building trainings were imparted to them. Descriptive
cum experiment research design was used. Simple random sampling technique was
used to select 400 respondents for knowledge assessment. Out of them 80 respondents
were selected through cluster sampling for imparting training. Interview schedule was
developed to assess the knowledge of the respondents. The collected data was
analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean percent scores and paired t-test.
Findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were below 35 years
of age, belonged to lower caste and had nuclear family with 5-8 members in their
families. Respondent had poor educational background and were engaged in multiple
domestic tasks and working in more than one house. Sweeping, mopping and dish
washing tasks were dominated by lower caste respondents. They were low paid, faced
caste discrimination and poor appreciation at workplace. More than half of the
respondents had poor initial knowledge in all 7 major components and vast majority
(92.75 per cent) of the respondents had overall Poor knowledge (23.84 MPS).

Knowledge gap in the entire components were more than 70 MPS except in personal
grooming and hygiene component. Training module was designed to fill up the
knowledge gap of the respondents. Modules were developed on 7 components viz.
housekeeping, cooking, Household equipment use and care, Care of family members,
Occupational health and safety, Personal grooming and hygiene, Government and
welfare schemes. Trainings were given to impart knowledge and skills to domestic
workers for increasing their employability potential. Pre-post analysis showed that
highest gain in knowledge was in safety and care of family members component (67.6
per cent) followed by household equipment (61.1 per cent) and more than fifty per
cent in housekeeping and personal grooming & hygiene component. Overall gain in
knowledge was more than fifty per cent. It was found that training had significant
impact on gain in knowledge of the respondents at 0.01 significant level. It was
concluded that Training helped them to improve their knowledge. Gain in knowledge
was good among domestic workers and live demonstration and media exposure
helped in it.
