Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar

Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University popularly known as HAU, is one of Asia's biggest agricultural universities, located at Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. It is named after India's seventh Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh. It is a leader in agricultural research in India and contributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India in the 1960s and 70s. It has a very large campus and has several research centres throughout the state. It won the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Award for the Best Institute in 1997. HAU was initially a campus of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. After the formation of Haryana in 1966, it became an autonomous institution on February 2, 1970 through a Presidential Ordinance, later ratified as Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970, passed by the Lok Sabha on March 29, 1970. A. L. Fletcher, the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, was instrumental in its initial growth.

    Parental Involvement in Study Habits of Higher Secondary Students

    Studentsā€™ educational achievement (educational performance) of higher secondary students are affected by a number of factors such as intelligence, study habits, school environment and especially parents. Study Habits are the practices or the process of gaining information through learning and play an important role in improving the academic achievement. Parental encouragement and involvement in education has been related to better academic performance and increase in positive attitudes and behaviors of adolescents at school. The study was designed to determine the relationship between parental involvement and study habit of students of urban and rural area. From urban and rural area one government and one private school were selected from Bhiwani district of Haryana state. From each school 30 boys and 30 girls were selected randomly. Self prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables and Parental Involvement scale (PIS) by Chauhan and Ganotra-Arora (2001) was used for assessing parental involvement Study habit was assessed by Study Habit scale (SHS) by Rani and Jaidka (2015). The results revealed that majority of respondents were in average category of study habit and perceived moderate level of parental involvement. Study habit had a significant correlation with parental involvement. It was also revealed that there is no significant association between socio economic variable and study habit of higher secondary students. It can be interpreted from these results that higher parental involvement in study habits resulted in better study habits among children, while reverse was true for poor parental involvement. Parental involvement was found to be a strong predictor of all dimensions of study habits and overall study habits in studies by students. Exposure to mass media was positively and significantly correlated with concentration, comprehension, use of e-resources, interaction, drilling and overall study habits. Results further revealed that participation in sports was positively and significantly correlated with concentration, interaction and overall study habits and family income was positively and significantly correlated with use of e-resources.

    Academic Performance of Adolescents in Relation to Parental Encouragement

    The present study was undertaken in Hisar district of Haryana state. The objective of the study was to see the impact of the parental encouragement and family climate on academic performance adolescents. Two senior secondary schools of Hisar city (Govt. and Private) and two senior secondary schools of Chaudhariwas village (Govt. and Private) were selected as per the demand of study. A sample of 100 rural and 100 urban respondents including equal number of males and females of 16-18 year age were taken, thus to make a total sample of 200 adolescents. The Family Climate Scale (FCS) developed by Beena Shah (2006) was used to assess family climate of adolescents. Parental Encouragement Scale developed by R. R. Sharma (1988) was used to assess the level of parental encouragement of adolescents. Academic achievement of adolescents was assessed from the latest grade sheet collected from the school. The results revealed in total sample half of adolescents from urban and rural area had average level of academic performance and received moderate level of parental encouragement. Maximum number of children belonged to moderate category of family climate. A positive and significant relationship with academic performance and parental encouragement of adolescents was noticed. All the aspects of family climate had significant relationship with parental encouragement of adolescents. There was significant association between paternal education, maternal education and academic performance of adolescents. Further significant relationship between academic performance with parental education and parental occupation of adolescents was found.

    Genetic and Environmental Architecture of Twins Cognition

    Genetic and environmental influences on cognition of twins from two districts of state Haryana were assessed. A sample of 100 pairs of twins in the age groups of 6-8 years was chosen from selected locations. Cognition of twins was assessed with help of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children WISC-R (Wechsler, 1974) whereas home environment was assessed by using the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) Inventory (Bradley et al. 1988). Regarding personal profile of the respondents, the results revealed that most of the twins were boys having one sibling and second ordinal position. Majority of the twins were living in nuclear family with medium size family structure. With regard to parental education, highest percentage of twins were having their fathers educated 11th and above level but were farmers, where as mothers were educated upto matriculation that was the reason they were homemakers. Result on the twins indicated that all the aspects of cognitive abilities, namely, similarities, digit span, arithmetic, object assembly, comprehension and picture arrangement were found to make significant difference in cognition of twins on the basis of standard test. The heritability estimates shown a great role of genes in framing the overall cognitive abilities of twins. The significant associations of cognitive abilities were found with the variables namely; caste, mother education and occupation in Hisar district. Home environment was also influential factor for development of cognitive abilities in twins of both districts.

    Family Environment and Psycho-social Problems among Adolescents

    The present study was conducted purposively in Hisar district of Haryana state. Two schools from rural Hisar and two school from Hisar city were selected at random having co-education senior secondary schools. Total sample constituted of 240 adolescents, 120 from rural area and 120 from urban area, representing both the sexes in equal number. Family environment was assessed by Family Environment Scale (FES) by Bhatia and Chadha (1993). Youth Problem Inventory (YPI) developed and standardized by Verma (2004) was used to assess the adolescents' psycho-social problems. Results revealed that majority of rural and urban adolescents perceived average level of cohesion, expressiveness, conflict, acceptance and caring attitude, independence, organization and control in their families. Findings also disclosed that urban adolescents perceived family environment more accepting and caring, and more independent as compared to rural adolescents. Urban adolescents perceived family environment as more relationship oriented. Rural adolescents perceived their family environment more organized and controlled, i.e., system maintained than urban adolescents. It was found that male adolescents perceived family environment as more expressive and more personal growth oriented as compared to female respondents. Results also revealed that female adolescents perceived family environment as more organized and controlling as compared to male adolescents making family environment as more system maintenance oriented. Results of the present study revealed that majority of adolescents from rural and urban area experienced average level of family, school, social, personal and overall problems. Rural adolescents experienced more family problems, school problems and overall problems as compared to urban adolescents. Results further revealed that female adolescents experienced more family problems, personal problems and overall problems as compared to male adolescents. Regression analysis revealed that family environment significant predictor of psychosocial problems among adolescents. Lastly, results indicated that family income, paternal education and exposure to media were significant predictors of psycho-social problems among adolescents.

    Gender Stereotyping and its Influences on Career Choices among Adolescents

    Gender stereotypes are the generalized beliefs about the characteristics and qualities attributed to men and women in society. Choosing a career is an extremely important decision for a young adolescent, which impacts an individualā€™s entire future. The study was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state where one Government and one private school were selected from rural area and urban area. From each of the four selected schools of rural and urban area of Hisar, 25 boys and 25 girls of 17-19 years were selected, which constitutes a total of 200 adolescents. Self prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables and Career Preference Record (PES) by Bargava and Bargava (2001) was used for assessing career choices. Gender stereotyping among adolescents was assessed by developed and standardized Gender Stereotyping Inventory.Majority of the adolescents had moderate level of gender stereotyping and significant mean differences were found as per adolescentsā€™ academic class and parental education. Comparative mean scores identified that in science and technology, agricultural, commerce and management, medical and defense areas of careers male respondents showed significantly high preferences than girls. Significant mean differences were found in career choices as per adolescentsā€™ age and residential area. Further significant differences for career choices were found as per adolescents parental education, paternal occupation, type of school and medium of instruction.Gender stereotyping among adolescents was significantly associated with academic class, parental variables and socio economic variables of adolescents. Career choices of adolescents were significantly associated with gender stereotyping among adolescents. Further, career choices of adolescents were significantly associated with age, paternal education and occupation, residential area, type of school, medium of instruction, residential area, and family size of the adolescents.

    Sibling Relationship during Middle Adulthood in Relation to Emotional Intelligence in Haryana and Uttarakhand

    Middle adulthood is that period in life when one's energy is directed towards building and maintaining the structures upon which future generation depends. But after launching children and death of parents adults feel the need of social support network. Hence at this time of life siblings come up to support each other emotionally as well as psychologically. The sibling relationship is one of the most enduring relationships throughout a personā€™s life. Emotional intelligence is the ability of an individual to express emotions appropriately and the role of emotions is very crucial in individualā€™s lives because they get to know the perception of themselves and others through emotions. A well-developed ability to regulate oneā€™s emotions is an important element to quality relationships and therefore strengthens the quality of the relationship. This research examines adult sibling relationship in relation to emotional intelligence. The study was conducted in rural and urban area of Bhiwani district of Haryana and Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. From each state urban and rural sample constituted of randomly selected 120 adults including 60 males and 60 females of 40-50 years. . Self prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables and Adult sibling relationship scale (ASRS) by Nandwana & Katoch (2010) was used for assessing sibling relationship. Emotional intelligence was assessed by Emotional intelligence scale (EIS) of Hyde, Pethe & Dhar (2002) and Family environment was assessed using Family environment scale(FES) by Bhatia & Chadha (1993). The results revealed that majority of the adults had average level of sibling relationship, emotional intelligence and family environment. Emotional intelligence had positive and significant correlation with contact, emotional closeness and confiding dimension and negative and significant correlation with conflict dimension of sibling relationship of adults. Female respondents had better contacts and were more confiding with their siblings than the male respondents. Respondents differed significantly in all the aspects if sibling relationship on the basis of family environment. Emotional intelligence and family income were strong predictors of sibling relationship during middle adulthood and There was no significant association between location, area of residence, gender, income, caste and age of the respondents and their overall sibling relationship.

    Mental health status of adolescents in relation to academic stress and family environment

    Mental Health is defined as a state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. Academic stress is defined as the anxiety and stress that arises from schooling and education, therefore the study was examined to assess the mental health, academic stress, family environment and relationship of mental health with academic stress and family environment. The study was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state in govt. schools of Hisar city and Dobhi village on 200 adolescents of arts and science stream. The sample represents equal number of boys and girls ranging in 16-18 years of age group comprising equal sample size with regards to area of residence and stream of education. Tools used for the research was mental health battery by Singh and Gupta (1983), academic stress scale by Rao (2012) and family environment scale by Bhatia and Chadha (1993). Results revealed that rural respondents had better mental as compared to urban respondents. The results further, highlighted that female and science stream respondents had better mental health than their counterparts. With regards to academic stress, results portray that urban respondents face more academic stress than rural respondents and female respondents perceived more academic stress than their counterparts. Further, results highlighted that rural respondents had better family environment than urban respondents. Results also portray that male respondents perceived low family environment than female respondents. Results found significant and positive correlation between respondentā€Ÿs mental health and family environment. Results pinpointed that caste, occupation of father and monthly family income was significantly associated with mental health of respondents.

    Home Environment and Cognitive Abilities of Preschool Children

    The rearing environment is very powerful supporter of development and it is essential that parents of pre-schooler could use in all the possibility that predispose childrenā€™s development. Enriched home environment help in advance the cognitive development of children. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of home environment on cognitive abilities of preschool children. The study was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state where four schools having preschool unit were selected from rural area. To draw the sample from urban area five preschools were selected at random. From selected schools 240 pre-schoolers from the age group of 4 to 5 years were selected randomly. The sample consisted of equal number of boys and girls. Self-prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables of pre-school children. Home observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) by Bradley and Caldwell (1981) was used to assess Home Environment of pre-schoolers. Cognitive abilities of pre-schoolers were assessed by using Pandeyā€™s Cognitive Development Test for Pre-schoolers by Hema Pandey (1992). Frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation, ā€˜zā€™ test, chi-square and coefficient of correlation were used to analyse the data. Results indicated that majority of the preschool children had moderate level of cognitive abilities and home environment. Cognitive abilities of children were associated with dimensions of home environment viz; learning stimulation, language stimulation, physical environment, modeling, variety in experience and acceptance. Positive and significant correlations existed between dimensions of home environment and cognitive abilities. The cognitive abilities of children was associated with personal and socio-economic variables viz; area, parental education, paternal occupation and family size.

    Moral judgement in relation to emotional stability of children

    Moral judgement is the judgement which deals with the moral values or quality and evaluates the rightness or wrongness of actions. Emotions have a motivating role of supporting moral behaviour and opposing immoral behaviour. The main purpose of the study was to assess moral judgement and emotional stability and investigate the influence of emotional stability and home environment on moral judgement of children. The study was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state. Two schools one government and one private were selected from rural and urban area (four schools). From selected schools 200 children from the age group of 8 to 10 years were selected randomly. The sample consisted of equal number of boys and girls i.e. 25 boys and 25 girls. Self-prepared questionnaire was used to delineate personal and socio-economic variables of children. Moral Judgment Test by Sinha and Verma (1971), Emotional Stability Test for Children by Gupta and Singh (1985) and Home environment Test by Mohite (1989) were used to assess moral judgment, emotional stability and home environment of children respectively. Frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation, ā€žzā€Ÿ test, chi-square, coefficient of correlation and ANOVA were used to analyse the data. Results indicated that majority of the children had moderate level of moral judgement and emotional stability. Significant mean differences were found in analogies, best moral answer and definition aspects of moral judgement as per gender, emotional stability as per residential area and school status of children and home environment aspects as per gender. Positive and significant correlation existed between aspect of moral judgement and emotional stability of children. Emotional stability of children was significantly associated with aspect of moral judgement. viz; analogies. The moral judgement of children was associated with personal and socio-economic variables viz; class and school status of children.
