Abstract
Middle adulthood is that period in life when one's energy is directed towards building and maintaining the structures upon which future generation depends. But after launching children and death of parents adults feel the need of social support network. Hence at this time of life siblings come up to support each other emotionally as well as psychologically. The sibling relationship is one of the most enduring relationships throughout a person’s life. Emotional intelligence is the ability of an individual to express emotions appropriately and the role of emotions is very crucial in individual’s lives because they get to know the perception of themselves and others through emotions. A well-developed ability to regulate one’s emotions is an important element to quality relationships and therefore strengthens the quality of the relationship. This research examines adult sibling relationship in relation to emotional intelligence. The study was conducted in rural and urban area of Bhiwani district of Haryana and Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. From each state urban and rural sample constituted of randomly selected 120 adults including 60 males and 60 females of 40-50 years. . Self prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables and Adult sibling relationship scale (ASRS) by Nandwana & Katoch (2010) was used for assessing sibling relationship. Emotional intelligence was assessed by Emotional intelligence scale (EIS) of Hyde, Pethe & Dhar (2002) and Family environment was assessed using Family environment scale(FES) by Bhatia & Chadha (1993). The results revealed that majority of the adults had average level of sibling relationship, emotional intelligence and family environment. Emotional intelligence had positive and significant correlation with contact, emotional closeness and confiding dimension and negative and significant correlation with conflict dimension of sibling relationship of adults. Female respondents had better contacts and were more confiding with their siblings than the male respondents. Respondents differed significantly in all the aspects if sibling relationship on the basis of family environment. Emotional intelligence and family income were strong predictors of sibling relationship during middle adulthood and There was no significant association between location, area of residence, gender, income, caste and age of the respondents and their overall sibling relationship.
