Abstract
Gender stereotypes are the generalized beliefs about the characteristics and qualities attributed to men and women in society. Choosing a career is an extremely important decision for a young adolescent, which impacts an individual’s entire future. The study was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state where one Government and one private school were selected from rural area and urban area. From each of the four selected schools of rural and urban area of Hisar, 25 boys and 25 girls of 17-19 years were selected, which constitutes a total of 200 adolescents. Self prepared questionnaire was used to delineate socio-personal variables and Career Preference Record (PES) by Bargava and Bargava (2001) was used for assessing career choices. Gender stereotyping among adolescents was assessed by developed and standardized Gender Stereotyping Inventory.Majority of the adolescents had moderate level of gender stereotyping and significant mean differences were found as per adolescents’ academic class and parental education. Comparative mean scores identified that in science and technology, agricultural, commerce and management, medical and defense areas of careers male respondents showed significantly high preferences than girls. Significant mean differences were found in career choices as per adolescents’ age and residential area. Further significant differences for career choices were found as per adolescents parental education, paternal occupation, type of school and medium of instruction.Gender stereotyping among adolescents was significantly associated with academic class, parental variables and socio economic variables of adolescents. Career choices of adolescents were significantly associated with gender stereotyping among adolescents. Further, career choices of adolescents were significantly associated with age, paternal education and occupation, residential area, type of school, medium of instruction, residential area, and family size of the adolescents.
