Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF LIGNOCELLULOSE BIODEGRADING BACTERIA FROM BEEJAMRUT AND JEEVAMRUT AND THEIR EFFICACY ON RICE AGRO-WASTE

    Lignocellulose biodegrading bacteria were isolated from the Beejamrut and Jeevamrut on Nutrient agar, L-MSM agar and CMC agar medium by serial dilution technique wherein, the highest microbial population was found to be at first day of preparation from Beejamrut whereas in Jeevamrut it was maximum at 15th day of preparation. Total 48 morphologically distinguished isolated colonies were selected, out of which six isolates, J1, J4, J6, B1, B3 and B5 shown promising zone on CMC agar and five isolates, J2, J3, J5, B2 and B4 growth on L- MSM Lignin agar. Further they were screened for the production of laccase and lignin Peroxidase and found positive. Cultural, morphological, biochemical and molecular characterization through 16S rRNA sequencing was carried out for identification of selected isolates and found belonging to genus Rhodococcus viz. R. equi AAU J1 Accn. No. MH591220, R. pyridinivorans AAU J3 Accn. No. MH591222; genus Psuedomonas viz. P. aeruginosa AAU J2 Accn. No. MH591221, P. punonensis AAU B4 Accn. No. MH591229 and genus Bacillus viz. B. cereus AAU J4 Accn. No. MH591223, B. safensis AAU J6 Accn. No. MH591225, B. safensis AAU J5 Accn. No. MH591224, B. tequilensis AAU B2 Accn.     INFLUENCE OF INSECTICIDES, FUNGICIDES AND HERBICIDES ON BIO-NPK BACTERIAL CONSORTIUM IN VITRO AND ON COTTON IN POTS

    Influence of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides on Bio NPK consortium in vitro and on cotton in pots was studied. In vitro influence of pesticides on Bio NPK consortium and its individual member was tested by liquid and plate bio assay with the three doses of pesticides i.e. field recommended dose (X), half the field recommended dose (½X) and double the field recommended dose (2X). Seven pesticides, five fungicides and three herbicides were taken for laboratory study and found that insecticides viz. Spinosad 45% SC, Fipronil 5% SC, Imidacloprid 30.5% EC and Dichlorvos 76% EC were found compatible at all the three doses in plate assay. While, Profenofos 50% EC, Chlorpyrifos 20% EC, Copper oxychloride 50% W/W, Ridomil 68% WP, Pyraclotrobin 20% WG, Pendimethalin 38.7% EC, Quizalofop 5% EC and Finoxaprop 9% EC, found compatible at regular dose of pesticide.

    ISOLATION OF PINK PIGMENTED FACULTATIVE METHYLOTROPHS (PPFMs) FROM THE PHYLLOSPHERE OF SOLANACEOUS CROPS AND ITS EFFICACY ON TOMATO, BRINJAL AND CHILLI

    Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs (PPFMs) were isolated from the phyllosphere of solanaceous crops from Anand on NMS medium supplemented with methanol (1%) by leaf imprinting technique. The isolates were checked for survival on methanol 1 to 5%, 22 isolates were survived to 5% methanol and less, on the basis of enzymatic activity of isolates for methane degradation (Soluble methane monooxygenase and methanol dehydrogenase) five isolates were selected. Morphological, Biochemical and Molecular characterization through 16S rRNA sequencing was carried out for identification of selected isolates and all found to belonging genus Methylobacterium viz. Methylobacterium populi AAU PPFM C-7 (MH578621), Methylobacterium radiotolerans AAU PPFM C-17 (MH578622), M. populi AAU PPFM C-19 (MH578623), M. populi AAU PPFM T-2 (MH578624) and M. radiotolerans B-2 (MH586819).

    DEVELOPMENT OF AZOLLA BASED PGPB BIOGRANULES AND ITS EFFICACY IN OKRA

    Present investigation was carried out during 2016 to 2017 with an aim to develop Azolla based PGPB biogranules and ascertain their shelf life followed by efficacy in okra cv Gujarat Okra 5 (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench). Mass production of Azolla was studied in various growth media viz.cow dung, H40, IRRI, RP, SSP etc. with / without soil and it was observed that addition of soil in various nutrient media was beneficial registering higher biomass. In comparison to all media, cow dung with soil was found better for long term higher yield of Azolla.

    AGRICULTURALLY BENEFICIAL BACTERIAL ISOLATES FROM PANCHAGAVYA AND ESTABLISHING THEIR PGP ROLE IN CHILLI (Capsicum annuum L.)

    The present study was aimed to prepare Panchagavya (PG) which is concoction of desi cow’s direct (Milk, cow dung, cow urine) and 2 derived (curd and ghee) products. Moreover, Modified Panchgavya (MPG) using additional ingredients like sugarcane juice, yeast and ripened banana was also prepared. Total ten bacteria were isolated using different nutrient media from PG and MPG. The isolates were characterized morphologically and biochemically. Amongst all, two isolates V1PG, V3PG isolated from Panchagavya and two isolates V9MPG and V10MPG proved to be the best for their plant growth promoting efficiency viz. solubilization/mobilization of insoluble phosphate and potash, production of siderophore, cellulase and ACC deaminase enzyme and growth hormone - indole acetic acid (IAA). All the four bacteria showed inhibition of plant pathogenic fungi however, isolate V1PG proved the best and shown zone of inhibition of funagl pathogens Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina Fusarium solani, Aspergillus niger, Pythium sp. and Alternaria alternata by 50, 45 and 40, 40 , 21 and 20 percent followed by V3PG by 46, 35 , 36, 35, 20 and 15 percent , respectively over control.

    Isolation and characterization of rhizospheric bacteria from medicinal plants and their efficacy for plant growth promotion in Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata)

    The present study was aimed to isolate plant growth promoting bacteria from the rhizosphere of medicinal plants. Total eighteen bacteria were isolated using different nutrient media from rhizospheric soil of medicinal plants viz. Safed musli (Chlorophytum borivillianum), Shankh pushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) from Anand Agriculture University, Gujarat. The isolates were characterized morphologically and biochemically. Amongst all, three isolates A5, A7 and A18 proved to be the best for their plant growth promoting efficiency viz. solubilization/mobilization of insoluble phosphate and potash, production of siderophore, cellulase and ACC deaminase enzyme and growth hormone indole acetic acid (IAA) as well as showed inhibition of plant pathogenic fungi Macrophomina phaseolina and Aspergillus flavus by 27% to 55%, respectively

    Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a gram-positive, spore forming, rod shape soil bacterium. Various strains of B. thuringiensis produce different insecticidal crystal proteins which are encoded by cry genes. The present investigation was carried out with the aim of isolation and characterization of native B. thuringiensis isolates from Anand district of Middle Gujarat with respect to identify the cry genes and bioassay of the most potent isolate.
