The adults of Taenia spprlive in the intestines of dogs and other canines and discharge eggs in their faces, which are then ingested by grazing animals, usually sheep. A two years old non-descript female sheep brought to the Orathanadu veterinary college and research institute teaching hospital with the history of swelling on the right shoulder region. Clinical examination revealed soft, fluid filled fluctuating mass. Exploratory radiography and ultrasound confirmed the fluid filled mass. The animal treated by surgical removal of cyst with the help of local anaesthesia. Diagnosis made by microscopical examination which revealed Coenuri stage of adult worm of Taenia spp. The animal was treated with praziquantel at a dose rate of 100m mg/kg body weight. An uneventful recovery was noticed with absence of fecal egg.ArticleItem Open Access Duck viral enteritis in chronically infected and partially immune duck flock of nomadic(2018-02) Krishnakumar, S.; Sivakumar, M.; Selvaraj, P.; Yogeshpriya, S.; Veeraselvam, M.; TANUVASNomadics depends on livestock and poultry for their livelihood. Duck keeping is common among nomadics in delta districts of Tamil Nadu. This research was carried in a duck flock having a history of in appetence, polydipsia, star grazing and inconsistent mortality of about 8-10 birds in a day. The clinical samples were collected and subjected to bacteriological examination and molecular diagnosis. This flock showed positive for Duck viral enteritis and E. coli infections. This research found that the epidemiological risk factor for the inconsistent mortality was possibly due to chronically infected and partially immune birds in flock.ArticleItem Open Access ECG Markers in Subclinical Hypocalcaemia Exacerbated Clinical Ketosis in Transition Cows(Indian Veterinary Association, Chennai, 2019-05) Yogeshpriya, S.; Selvaraj, P.; Krishnakumar, S.; Saravanan, M.; Ramkumar, P.K.; TANUVASIn a study of 23 transition cows, which were screened for hypocalcemia, 6 were found to have subclinical hypocalcemia and 3 were found to have clinical milk fever. The 6 cows with hypocalcemia were also found to have severe negative energy balance. Farmers failed to report for early treatment and all 6 cows eventually developed into clinical ketosis. Point of care urine analysis revealed positive for ketone bodies. Biochemical analysis revealed hypoglycemia and hypocalcaemia. Electrocardiographic assessment showed prolonged QTc and STc interval. Based on clinical examinations and laboratory findings the presented cases were diagnosed as subclinical hypocalcemia exacerbated clinical ketosis.ArticleItem Open Access Entropion in New Born Lambs(INTAS Polivet, 2009) Venkataramanan, R.; Selvan, P.; Anilkumar, R.; Krishnakumar, S.; Iyue, M.; TANUVASEntropion is a condition where the eyelid(s) are turned inwards causing irritation and abrasions to the surface of the eye. In the new born lamb this condition initiates severe keratitis and conjunctivitis, which if neglected can lead to corneal opacity, corneal ulceration, iris prolapse, suppurative panopthalmitis and sometimes even loss of eye. In case of bilateral affections this can cause complete blindness and death due to starvation. The present paper describes the diagnosis, treatment and correction of entropion in lambs.ArticleItem Open Access Epidemiological Trends of Leptospirosis, a re-emerging Anthropozoonoses(2014-06) Saravanan, S.; Palanivel, K.M.; Krishnakumar, S.; TANUVASLeptospirosis is a zoonotic and contagious disease of animals and humans, and in humans the most widespread infection in the world apart from malaria.ArticleItem Open Access Epidemiology and Clinical Features of Naturally Occurring Nasal Schistosomiasis in Cattle from Delta Region of Tamilnadu(Indian Veterinary Association, 2018-03) Yogeshpriya, S.; Veeraselvam, M.; Jayalakshmi, K.; Krishnakumar, S.; Selvaraj, P.; TANUVASThis study aimed to correlate the occurrence of schistosomiasis with age, sex, breed and seasonal prevalence of cattle. A total of 102 cross bred cows of age 2-5 years were screened and examined in the study. Among those, twelve were found naturally infected by theileria. Another twelve of the same age and apparently healthy animals were kept as control. Haematological values of haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total erythrocyte count, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in anaemic cattle compared to non-anaemic (healthy) cattle. Comparisons of electrolyte balance in this study showed significant decrease at the level of p<0.05 in sodium and ionized calcium concentrations of anaemic animals when compared to the control group. However, differences in blood potassium and total calcium levels were not significant (p>0.05). Comparisons of biochemical values indicated a significant increase (p < 0.05) in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine level, while decrease (p < 0.05) in total protein and albumin concentration in anaemic animals as compared to control group. These results indicated an overall poor picture of circulating blood in animals suffering from theileria associated bovine anaemiaArticleItem Open Access Haematological and Biochemical Alterations in Babesiosis of Crossbred Cow(Indian Veterinary Journal, 2017-04) Jayallakshmi, K.; Sasikala, M.; Kavitha, S.; Ravi, R.; Veeraselvam, M.; Krishnakumar, S.; TANUVASA 4 year old crossbred jersey cow was presented with pale icteric mucous membrane and coffee coloured urine.
