Cutaneous filariasis in a cross bred cow - a case report

Abstract
In India, Filariasis is endemic in areas where the climate is hot and humid. Bovine stephano filarial dermatitis is has long been reported from terai region of northern India and in Bengal. This paper reports the occurrence of filarial dermatitis in Cauvery delta region of Tamilnadu. A six year old cow received to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, VCRI, Orathanadu with the history of ulcerative wounds mainly on the fore quarter region sero-sanguinous exudates from wounds. There was no pruritus. Complete blood count was carried in automated hematology analyzer (Vet Scan HM 5). There was a marked Eosinophilia (5.27x103/pl). Cytological examination of sero-sanguineous fluid revealed marked eosinophilia. Deep scrapings from skin indicate the presence of filarid worm confirms the diagnosis. The animal was treated with ivermectin along with prednisolone. One dose of levamisole was also administered. Uneventful recovery was reported after 15 days of therapy.
