Six Hallikar bullocks with history of anorexia and suspended rumination were selected for the study. Although with normal vital signs, clinical examination of left paralumbar fossa revealed depressed rumen motility with a firm to hard rumen. A small and hard rumen were observed upon rectal examination. Rumen fluid examination showed a pH of 5.5 - 6.0 with reduced protozoal activity. The clinical cases were diagnosed as rumen impaction and were treated successfully with Inj. Metoclopramide, fluids and Vitamin B-complex injections.ArticleItem Open Access Dystocia Due to Multiple Fetal Skeletal Malformation in a Cross Bred Cow(2011-06) Raja, S.; Thirumurugan, K.; Balasubramanian, S.; Sathiamoorthy, T.; Ganesh, R.; Arunaman, C.S.; Asokan, S.A.; TANUVASA rare case of multiple fetal skeletal malformations in a Holstein-Friesian Calf resulting in dystocia and its successful per vaginal delivery is reported.OtherItem Open Access EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF SUBCLINICAL MASTITIS IN A JERSEY CROSS BRED COW(TANUVAS, 2017-08) Tamilarasan, D.; Arunaman, C.S.; Chandrasekaran, D.; TANUVASA six year old recently calved Jersey cross bred cow was presented at large animal medicine outpatient unit of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex in Madras Veterinary College, with a history of sudden drop in milk yield. On physical examination, all vital sign parameters were within the normal range. No visible abnormality was noticed on macroscopic examination of milk. Blood profile revealed normal haematology and serum biochemistry. Milk samples from individual quarters were screened for subclinical mastitis with a combination of California mastitis test, clot on boiling test, white side test, and pH. The animal’s right fore quarter and left hind quarter showed positivity to all the four tests (California mastitis test, clot on boiling test, white side test, and pH). The milk sample was sent for bacteriological examination. The result revealed the presence of E.coli. Antibiogram revealed higher sensitivity to Gentamicin. The animal was treated with Gentamicin at 4mg/kg body weight, Vitamin AD3E and intramammary infusion of cefoperazone for five consecutive days. After five days, milk samples were screened and confirmed for absence of mastitis. Milk production was regained almost to normal. The patient recovered uneventfully.ArticleItem Open Access Echocardiograhic Findings of Idiopathic Pericardial Effusion in a Dog(INTAS Polivet, 2010) Chandrasekar, M.; Vijayalakshmi, P.; Thirunavukkarasu, P.S.; Sumathi, D.; Arunaman, C.S.; Nambi, A.P.; TANUVASPericardial effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardium, the membranous, fibroserous sac enclosing the heart and the bases of the great vessels. Idipathic haemorrhagic pleural effusion is a common canine disease in which serosanguineous to bloody fluid accumulates in the pericardial sac without evidence of neoplasia, cardiac disease, trauma, infection or uraemia (Dupre et al., 2001). The effusion usually accumulates slowly and progressively and presents with sign of chronic cardiac tamponade and right sided heart failure with lethargy, exercise intolerance or collapse (Machida et al., 2004). The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was almost similar in sheep (83.45%) and goats (83.41%). Mixed infection (58.9%) was more than the single infection (41.1%). Among the single infection, oocyst of Eimeria species (71.18%) was found to be more common followed by Strongyloides spp (13.56%), Strongyle (12.71%), Trichuris spp (1.69%) and amphistomes (0.84%).OtherItem Open Access Rabies in a Calf(TANUVAS, Chennai, 2014-07) Sufeesh, S.G.; Gowri, B.; Arunaman, C.S.; TANUVASA male Jersey cross calf, aged about 5 months came to large animal clinic of medicine ward madras veterinary teaching hospital with the history of not taking feed for past three days and also eating inanimate objects. Clinical examination revealed behavioral disorders, vocalization, ataxia, profuse salivation, butting and hyperesthesia. The case was suspected for rabies and admitted in UOR. Clinical examination revealed alopecia with erythematous skin lesions over the ventral part of the neck, thoracic region, axillary region and hyperpigmentation of the skin. Skin scrapping results were found to be negative for mites. Tape impression smear stained with lactophenol blue revealed yeast buds and fungal hyphae. The case was diagnosed as concurrent Malesezzia with fungal infection. Animal was treated with Inj. Enrofloxacin @5 mg/kgB. WT, lnj Chlorphenaramine Maleate @ 0.25mg/kg B.Wt, lnj Vit A @ 1ml ( on alternative days) for 5 days. Topical therapy with chlorhexidine shampoo and ketaconazole shampoo wash (once in 4 days) along with acetic acid wash @ 1: 5 dilution daily was advised. Physical examination showed congested mucus membrane, pyrexia and dyspnea. Plain radiography revealed air filled dilated esophagus with alveolar pattern overlying and obscuring the caudal cardiac silhouette indicating aspiration.
