    An analysis of entrepreneurial activities among women in tribal areas of Southern Rajasthan

    The present study was undertaken with the following objectives to explore the entrepreneurial activities among the women in tribal areas of Southern Rajasthan , study the participation of the women in entrepreneurial activities, extent of income generation from entrepreneurial activities and its utilization by the women, problems faced by the women entrepreneurs in carrying out the entrepreneurial activities and SWOT analysis of the selected entrepreneurial activities performed by the women in tribal areas of Southern Rajasthan. The present study was conducted randomly in Udaipur and Dungarpur districts of Southern Rajasthan. Total sample consisted of 457 women entrepreneurs. Further 200 respondents out of 457 were selected purposively for studying the participation, income earned and its utilization, problems faced by the women and SWOT analysis of selected enterprise. Interview technique was used for data collection. Frequency, percentage, mean percent score and ANOVA were used for analysis of the data statistically. The results of the study point out that majority of the respondents (61.27%) were in the age group of 31-45 years, 83.16 per cent were married, from SC caste (76.58%) and had a medium family size (76.59%).Majority of respondents had land holding of 1.0-2.5 acres (50.33%) and mixed house (59.08%) ,57.98 per cent respondents had small herd size and more than half (52.52) had kutcha dwelling for livestock. All the respondents had farming as family occupation and majority of the respondents (67.08) belonged to medium socio economic status. The major enterprises pursued by the women entrepreneurs were vermi compost (34.20%), dairy (16.72%), aonla cultivation and processing (46.80%), poultry (31.38%) and turmeric cultivation (36.80%). The other enterprises pursued by the women were nursery raising, orchards, vegetable cultivation, tailoring, jute articles making, goat rearing, detergent making, grocery shop, beauty parlor and flour mill in which involvement of the respondents was found to be minimum (1-3%). More than half of the respondents (52.51%) attended training programs related to the entrepreneurial activities. All the respondents (100%) had sole proprietorship of their enterprise. Family members were the major source of finance for majority of the respondents (61.27%).Respondents were participating in almost all the activities related to different enterprises either individually or jointly with the male members of the family. Maximum participation of the women was found in vermi compost enterprise (MPS 86.66) followed by turmeric cultivation (MPS 83.01) and dairy enterprise (MPS 70.88). Relatively less participation of the women was observed in activities related to aonla cultivation and processing (MPS 67.06) and poultry enterprise (MPS 65). Net profit earned from aonla cultivation and processing enterprise was Rs. 366809.51/- followed by turmeric cultivation (Rs.303653/-), poultry (Rs.109114.19/-), dairy (Rs.92626.08/) and vermi compost enterprise (Rs- 2845.42/-).Majority of the respondents used their income for repaying their debts. Less than half of the respondents used their income for personal expenses. Major problems faced by the respondents in the different enterprises were fluctuating demand of the products in market, lack of training programs, high cost of input material, poor storage facility, shortage of initial capital, lack of local market, high cost of transportation and difficult loan procedure. Major strengths of different enterprises were compatibility of the enterprise, scope for selling and good family support. The major weaknesses include high initial investment, limited shelf life and lack of storage facility. Growing demand in the market was the major opportunity whereas too much competition in the market was the major threat
