dc.description.abstractCadmium concentration was measured in tissue of 36 individuals of the Indian squid; Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvauceli, captured by the commercial fishery at southern coast of Saurashtra region during the year 2007 – 2008. Cd level was analysed in four different tissues i.e. muscle, digestive gland/liver, tentacles, and skin. The concentration of Cadmium in muscle, digestive gland, tentacles and skin were in the ranges of 0.022 - 0.322, 0.053 – 2.044, 0.023 – 0.224, 0.035 - 0.292 ppm respectively. The concentration of Cd was generally higher in the digestive gland than in the other tissues and highest value recorded was 2.162 ppm. However, the recorded level of Cd was far below the permissible limit in all other organs except digestive gland. During this study 15 % of squid samples exhibited Cd level beyond the tolerance limit of 1 ppm. The present study showed that, the average concentration of Cd was significantly lower in the edible parts rather than non-edible parts. However, no significant relation was found between Cd concentration and body length of the squid. The digestive gland plays a major role in Cd bioaccumulation & detoxification in the squid. Hence, the removal of liver and visceral component of squid before processing can ensure safe and wholesome processed squid for human consumption.en_US
