Abstract
A field experiment entitled “Performance of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
under Varying Levels of Silicon and Restricted Irrigation” have been conducted
on clay loam soil of Instructional Farm, Department of Agronomy, Rajasthan college
of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur
during rabi 2019-2020. The treatments comprising four irrigation levels (I1: no
irrigation, I2: one irrigation at CRI, I3: two irrigation at CRI and booting stage and I4:
three irrigation at CRI, booting and milking stage) and four silicon levels (S1: control,
S2: 100 kg ha-1, S3: 150 kg ha-1 and S4: 200 kg ha-1), assigned respectively to main and
sub plots and those were replicated three times in split plot design. For such
experiment wheat variety “MP 3336” was used.
Results revealed that under three irrigations crop obtained highest value of
growth parameters (plant height, dry matter accumulation, total tillers, flag leaf area,
days to 50 per cent heading and days to 50 per cent maturity) and yield attributes viz.,
effective tillers, grains ear-1, weight of grains ear-1, ear length and test weight as
compared to other irrigation levels. However, the maximum crop growth rate between
50 to 75 DAS under one irrigation and between 75 DAS to at harvest under two
irrigations however, highest relative growth rate was recorded under no irrigation.
Superior performance of growth and yield attributes with three irrigations resulted in
significant increased in grain, straw, biological yield and harvest index. Similarly,
maximum protein content, chlorophyll content and relative water content were also
recorded with three irrigation levels, while maximum proline content was recorded
with control treatment. Application of three irrigations recorded maximum nitrogen,

phosphorous and potassium content and uptake by grain and straw compared to rest of
the irrigation treatments. Similarly, maximum nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and
silicon content in soil was obtained in three irrigations. The higher net return
(` 67180 ha-1) and B-C ratio (1.99) were obtained under three irrigations.
Application of silicon 200 kg ha-1 significantly increased growth parameters
viz., plant height, dry matter accumulation, total tillers, crop growth rate, flag leaf
area, days to 50 per cent heading and days to 50 per cent maturity and yield attributes
i.e., effective tillers, grains ear-1, weight of grains ear-1, ear length and test weight as
compared to remaining silicon levels. The maximum grain, straw, biological yield and
harvest index were obtained under silicon application 200 kg ha-1 resulted in highest.
Grain protein content, total chlorophyll content, relative water content also increased
with silicon 200 kg ha-1. Whereas, proline content in leaves deceased with increasing
level of silicon in soil. Further application of silicon 200 kg ha-1 significantly recorded
maximum nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium content and uptake in grain and straw
compared to other silicon levels. Similarly maximum nitrogen, phosphorous,
potassium and silicon content in soil was obtained in silicon 200 kg ha-1 treatment.
Application of silicon 200 kg ha-1 resulted in significantly higher net return (` 58770
ha-1) and B-C ratio (1.79) compared to other silicon levels.
