Abstract
Weeds are considered a nuisanee in the monoculture agrieultural
systems of industrial nations where several thousand hectares of wheat
or corn are planted solely for the cereal. In case of developing countries,
fields are surrounded by local flora, Veedsâ that serve useful functions
critical to the wellbeing of rural and urban communities. One sueh
useful weed is Asteracantha longifolia which is described in ayurvedic
literature as Ikshura, Ikshugandha, and Kokilasha (having eyes like the
Kokila or Indian cuckoo). In India, the sacred Vedas give many
references of medicinal plants and weeds which were used in the past.
â Rig Vedaâ ?, one of the oldest Indian literatures mentions the use of
Cinnamon [Cinnamomum uerum Prel.), Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rose.),
Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) etc. not only in religious ceremonies but
also in medical preparation.
