The aim of the study was to compare the postoperative analgesic effect of meloxicam, ketoprofen, tolfenamic acid and flunixin following soft tissue surgery. The study was conducted in 24 clinical cases of dogs and were randomly divided into four groups viz., group I, II, III and IV. Meloxicam, Ketoprofen, Tolfenamic acid and Flunixin were administered at the dose rates of 0.2, 2.0, 4.0 and 1.0 mg per kg body weight intravenously, in group I, II, III and IV animals, respectively. After 15 minutes, Midazolam was administered at the dose rate of 0.3 mg per kg body weight intravenously, to all the animals. General anaesthesia was induced with Propofol at the dose rate of 6 mg/kg body weight in all the animals intravenously, and maintained with Isoflurane. Ovariohysterectomy (OHE) was performed in all the animals as per the standard technique. The postoperative analgesic effect was studied by visual analogue score at various time interval of postoperative period. Meloxicam provided better postoperative analgesia up to 12 h of surgery and not produced significant adverse effect in all the animals. It could be safely used as a preemptive analgesic in midazolam-propofol-isoflurane anaesthesia for ovariohysterectomy in dogs.en_US
