The present investigation entitled “Genetic Variability and Correlation Studies in Black Gram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper]’’ was conducted with 29 genotypes (including two checks namely KU-96-3 and Pratap Urd-1 during Kharif- 2016 at the Botany farm, Department of plant breeding and genetics, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur. The genotypes were planted in randomized block design with three replications. The observations were recorded for 12 characters viz., days to 50 per cent flowering, days to 75 % maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per plant, seed yield per plant, biological yield, harvest index, 100-seed weight and seed protein content on five randomly selected plants from each genotype in each rows, while days to 50 per cent flowering and days to 75 % maturity were recorded on plot basis and average values were subjected to analysis variability parameters, correlation coefficients and path coefficients. The estimates of variability parameters revealed that differences between the estimates of GCV and PCV were found least for most of the characters. Higher estimates of GCV were observed for seed yield per plant, biological yield, number of pods per plant and number of branches per plant. Maximum heritability was found for number of branches per plant followed by 100-seed weight, plant height and number of pods per plant. While, maximum genetic gain was observed for seed yield per plant followed by number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant and biological yield. Present experimental findings revealed that characters viz., number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant, seed yield per plant and biological yield showed high GCV, heritability and genetic gain. Hence, selection can be made for improvement of these characters. Association estimates revealed that number of pods per plant was positively correlated at both genotypic as well as phenotypic levels with number of branches per plant, seed yield per plant, biological yield and harvest index. Similarly, seed yield per plant also showed positive and significant correlation with number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, biological yield and harvest index at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis revealed that maximum positive direct effect on seed yield per plant was exhibited number of branches per plant followed by biological yield. Thus, it is concluded that the genotypes showing more difference among themselves for per se performance, can be used for making crosses while based on correlation studies, traits viz., number of pods per plant should be considered as indirect trait to select for high yield.en_US
