dc.description.abstractPoultry sector has been rising spectacularly and the study suggest that the investment in small-scale poultry generates handsome returns and contributes towards food and nutrition security as well as poverty reduction. Jharkhand State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society has been promoting animal husbandry including backyard poultry farming. Taking cue from the literature and relevant stakeholders, a study was planned on the topic “Impact of backyard poultry on farmers of Angara and Silli blocks under Ranchi district of Jharkhand” with the specific objectives namely; to find out impact of backyard poultry on nutritional security of farmers, to study economics and assess impact of backyard poultry on income of the farmers and to analyze constraints in backyard poultry farming. Angara and Silli blocks of Ranchi district were purposively selected where Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society has been undertaking promotional activities. Ten farmers each from Paras Toli, Bhelwa Jara and Maeshpur Tungri Tola from Angara block and Cheeta Tanr, Lota and Nawadih from Silli block were selected randomly, thereby, the sample constituted 60 respondents. Variables for the study included age, education, family type, family size, size of holding, occupation, income, training exposure, poultry farming experience which were measured with tests and indices developed. Nutritional security was measured through consumption gap in vegetarian food items, consumption of poultry eggs and meat and energy supplement by eggs and poultry meat. Economic analysis was done through computation of gross and net return as well as BCR. Income supplement by backyard poultry farming was also calculated. Constraints were identified by soliciting responses from the farmers which were ranked on the basis of percentage value. The findings indicated the predominance of middle aged (70%), small (73%), educated up to high school (36%) farmers with nuclear family (67%), 4-6 members family size (73%), untrained (83%), poultry farming experience <5 years (73%) and income between Rs. 75000.00- 160000.00 (70%). As far as nutritional security is concerned, per month family consumption gap was found highest in milk and milk product (22.4 Kg) and lowest in sugar (2.28 Kg). Out of per month family calorie gap of 28, 81,802 K.cal, the poultry compensated by 13, 2, 7000 K.cal. The contribution from backyard poultry towards the mean annual income was 14.84% and the benefit- cost ratio of backyard was found to be 3.41. Farmers perceived low price of egg and culled poultry birds as the most important constraints. Overall, the contribution of backyard poultry towards nutrition and income security was found appreciable which, if, promoted with suitable incentives and extension strategies couldensure the realization of healthy and affluent rural society.en_US
