Thirty six normally calved crossbred dairy cows were randomly divided into 3 groups with 12 each to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of intrauterine ozonated oil on uterine involution pattern, uterine bacterial load reduction, postpartum uterine infections and their subsequent reproductive performance. Group I served as control and Group II and III received one time and two time intrauterine ozonated oil (100 mL) on day 5-7 and 14, respectively. Uterine involution pattern and uterine aerobic bacterial studies were done on day 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 pp. All the animals were screened for postpartum uterine infections using vaginoscopy and endometrial cytology and their reproductive performance were recorded. Observations recorded from uterine involution assessment and total uterine bacterial count revealed that reduction rate of uterine size and bacterial load was similar in both control and preventive ozone infused groups. Following intrauterine administration of ozonated oils, none of the study cows were found positive for puerperal metritis on day 10-14 pp. However, incidence of clinical endometritis examined on day 21(Group I vs II vs III; 33.33 vs 25 vs 25%) and sub clinical endometritis on day 28 pp (Group I vs II vs III; 25 vs 25 vs 16.6%) and on day of subsequent estrus (Group I vs II vs III; 16.6 vs 16.6 vs 8.3%) were noticed. In conclusion, the present study revealed that the prophylactic effect of intrauterine ozonated oil on uterine involution, reproductive performances and in preventing postpartum uterine infections is non-significant among different study groups.
