dc.description.abstractThe objectives of this study was to study the incidence of subacute rumen acidosis in dairy cattle and to study the effect of SARA on general health condition, body condition score, daily milk production, milk fat content, rumen fluid, feces and biochemical parameter. SARA was diagnosed by measuring pH of rumen fluid collected by rumenocentesis four hours after feeding. Dairy cows having rumen fluid pH in the range of 5.2 to 5.6 for a duration of minimum three hours were considered as positive for SARA. The incidence of SARA in dairy cows was found to be 20 per cent. The incidence of SARA was 70 per cent and 30 per cent in Jersey and HF breed of cows respectively. The incidence of SARA was high in mid lactation. The general health condition was disturbed in SARA affected dairy cows. Further 65 per cent of cows were in poor body condition score. The fecal pH in SARA affected dairy cows was significantly low. SARA affected fecal consistency and fecal structure in SARA affected dairy cows. Daily milk production and milk fat content were statistically low in SARA affected dairy cows. Rumen fluid examination indicated significantly lower SAT, significantly increased MBRT and poor to moderate iodophilic activity. Mean total protozoal count in SARA affected dairy cows was statistically low and there was a shift in the rumen microbial composition to Gram positive bacteria in SARA affected dairy cows. The mean GGT and AST values were found to be significantly increased in SARA affected dairy cows.en_US
