The organisms live in or on are occasionally associated with aquatic sediments, their mode of life is referred to as â benthosâ ?. This benthos constitute a major component in the estuarine as well as marine realm and play an important role in the ecology and food of many bottom feeding fin fishes and shellfishes (Parulekar et al., 1980). They were classified as meio, macro and microbenthos based on their size. McIntyre (1969) defines true meiobenthos as â a group of small metazoans passing 0.5 mm mesh, which by their size, number, generation time and adaptation can conveniently be considered separately from the larger members of the benthosâ ?.
