Abstract
The present study was intended to investigate the level of vocational interests of adolescents towards different vocational fields. The total sample for the present study consisted of 180 adolescents (30 boys and 30 girls) from three different categories of Income group. A preliminary survey was conducted in grade 9th to 12th students belonging to ten different government and private schools, to select the sample as per the delimitation of the study. The sample was selected by chit method from six coeducational government and private schools of Udaipur city based on the preliminary survey. To assess vocational interests of adolescents, comprehensive interest schedule developed by Vohra (1992) was used which assesses the vocational interests of adolescents in eight broad areas viz. influential, venturous, artistic, scientific, analytical, social, nature, clerical. The data was collected, coded and analyzed for the tool. Frequency and percentage was computed for each category and comparision between vocational interests of boys and girls as well as for different categories of income group was analysed using t test for difference between two means. The results of the study revealed that most of the adolescents had low and average level of interests towards most of the vocational fields studied, however in the areas of sports, enterprise and education adolescents revealed high interests. Significant statistical differences were observed in career interests of boys and girls, with girls having higher inclination towards artistic, performing, expressive, medical, humanitarian and educational fields whereas boys were found to have greater interests towards defence, sports, technical and computational fields. Career interests of adolescents also differed significantly with respect to their socioeconomic status. The findings of study are likely to be of immense importance to Scholars, teachers, psychologists, counselors, parents and others who are concerned with the sphere of career planning for the future generation.
