Triage can be defined as the evaluation and allocation of treatment to patients according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors. Critically ill patients have little physiological reserve to tolerate mistakes of omission or commission. Anticipation and prevention of problems before they occur is one of the cornerstones of optimal emergency and critical care medicine. Always assume the worst and treat for it, while maintaining the philosophy ‘above all, do no harm’.en_US
