A field experiment was conducted during winter 1986-87 on sandy loam soils at Birsa agricultural University Kanke Ranchi to assess the new wheat varieties for inter adaptability under varying irrigation supply conditions. Treatment comprising three irrigation levels (irrigation at CRI, GRI+Boot and CRI+Boot *Flowering stage) in main-plots and four varieties (HI 1114, UP 262, sonalika and HD 2402) in sub-plots was laid out in split plot design with four replications. Crop receiving three irrigations recorded significantly higher values of LLAR, COR, RGR and RAR (36.4 g an, 10.7 g m day, 0.205 g g 1 week and 8.0 g m2 day respectively) from boot to flowering and produced maximum grain yield of 25.3 g ha with a boat return of .5601.93 ha. Reduction in grain yield with one and two irrigations as compared to three irrigations was to the tune of 3.88 and 2.45 he which corresponded a loss of .881 and 670 ha, respectively. Seasonal consumptive water use of wheat varied from 293 to 319 mm with 1-3 irrigation. Wheat var. HI 1114 produced the highest grain yield of 25.24 q ha with minimum moisture use (292.6 m) and maximam wue (8.6 kg grain ha m water use), net return (s.5638.64 ha-1, and benefit cost ratio of 2.39.
