dc.description.abstractIn the present study an attempt has been made on physico-chemical characteristics, plankton, benthos and bird’s diversity and density of the Hebbal lake. The samples were analyzed at monthly intervals for a period of one year (January to December 2013). The results revealed that Dissolved Oxygen (DO), ammonia, phosphate, nitrate, Alkalinity and Hardness was maximum during rainy months. The pH, Total suspended solids, Total dissolved solids, Conductivity, Chlorides, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were higher during summer months. A total of 31 species of phytoplankton was represented with 4 groups of which Chlorophyceae was dominant with 11 species followed by Bacillariophyceae (10), Cyanophyceae (9) and Euglenophyceae (1). Zooplanktons represented by a total of 32 species with four groups viz. Rotifers (12) dominated followed by Copepoda (5), Cladocera (5), and Ostracoda (03) and others. The sediment pH was generally on the alkaline side ranging from 6.60 to 9.30.The temperature varied from 20.500C to 27.800C in the lake. The percentage organic carbon is varied from 0.30 to 3.51%. Seasonally, the pH and organic carbon was highest during the monsoon and less during pre monsoon. The lake soil is sandy to silty during monsoon due to inflow of sediment along with water and the soil is silty to claye during other seasons. Based on group wise seasonal analysis, the average mean abundance was maximum for dieptera (36.85%) followed by, nematodes (32.08%), molluscs (23.75 %) and annelida (4.00%) in the Lake. During the observation there were about 26 species of aquatic birds belonging to 11 families under eight orders were recorded. Maximum number of species belonged to Ardeidae (8) followed by Alcedinidae (3), Motacillidae (3), Anatidae, Rallidae, Ciconiidae, Phalacrocoracidae (2 each) and Charadridae, Pelecanidae, Scolopacidae and Podicipitidae (1each).The concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe and Hg) in water, sediment and organs (muscle, gills and viscera) of the dominant fish catch (Rohu, Mrigal and Tilapia) of Hebbal Lake, Bengaluru were analyzed. The results reveled that metal concentrations in water and soil samples were maximum during rainy months due to inflow of water into the lake. During summer months all the metal concentrations in water and soil samples were very low to not detectable level. The heavy metal concentrations in water samples were in the order Hg>Fe>Pb>Zn>Cu>Cd. The heavy metal content in sediment was in the order Fe>Hg>Zn>Cd>Cu>Pb. Accumulation of heavy metals in the organs of 3 fishes (Rohu, Mrigal and Tilapia) was found to be in the order gills>muscle>liver. In the gills, zinc was found maximum 0.1724, 0.5436 and 0.1319 mg/g dry weight of Rohu, Mrigal and Tilapia respectively. The study helps in better understanding for the management of the Hebbal lake for intensive fish culture.en_US
