dc.description.abstractSemen characteristics of twenty Amritmahal bulls (2-3 years: 3-5 years: 5-7 years: > 7 years) and effects of age and seasons (winter, summer, south-west monsoon and north-east monsoon) on semen production performance were investigated. Overall mean values of semen volume (ml), mass activity (0-5 scale), sperm concentration (millions/ml), initial motility (%), post thaw motility (%) were 5.11 ± 0.02, 4.32 ± 0.43, 1006.28 ± 4.34, 80.36 ± 0.13 and 49.89 ± 0.06 respectively. Effects of age on semen characteristics and frozen semen doses production of Amritmahal bulls were significant. Effect of seasons was significant both on semen quality and production performance. Mass activity and post initial motility were highest during summer (4.40 ± 0.03 and 50.1 ± 0.15 per cent respectively) and lowest during north-east monsoon (4.23 ± 0.05 and 49.8 ± 0.11 per cent respectively) seasons. During south-east monsoon average number of frozen semen doses produced per ejaculate were higher (264.90 ± 2.78) as compared to summer and winter seasons respectively. Rejection rates of semen doses are higher in adult bulls 5.64 per cent (> 7 years) as compared to younger 4.16 per cent (2-3 years) bulls. Effect of season on rejection rates was significant. It was highest during summer season (6.41 per cent), followed by north-east monsoon (5.68 per cent) and winter (4.33 per cent). The best period for harvesting of semen doses from Amritmahal bulls was monsoon fallowed by winter and summer. For obtaining large number of doses mature (5-7 years) Amritmahal bulls might be preferred over young bulls.en_US
