A field experiment entitled "Effect of plant density and herbicidal control on the productivity of clusterbean [Cyamupsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.j" was conducted on cla> loam soils, at Instructional Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur during khahf season of the year 2004. The objectives were to find out the optimum plant densit> and suitable herbicide for clusterbean. The experiment consisted of 21 treatment combinations comprising three plant densities (2.22, 3.33 and 4.44 lac plants ha') and seven weed control treatments (unweeded control, hand hoeing (25 DAS), fluchioralin (PPI) f?/; 0.75 kg a.i. ha', pendimethalin (PE) ci 0.75 kg a.i. ha"', metolachlor (PE) '7i] 1.0 kg a.i. ha', alachlor (PE) '«] 2 kg a.i. ha' and weed free check). These were evaluated under factorial RBD with three replications, allocating all the treatment combinations randomly in different replications. The results revealed that crop sown under plant density of 3.33 lac plants ha' significantly improved growth parameters and >ield attributes with concomitant increase in seed, haulm and biological yield b\' 22.64 and 9.02. 18 and 8.57 and 19,30 and 8 7 per cent, respectively over plant densities of 2.22 lac ha"' and 4.44 lac ha"'. Maximum net returns (Rs. 20983 ha"') and highest B.C ratio (2.80) was obtained with plant density of 3.33 lac ha"'. Weed control methods markedly reduced crop weed competition. Amongst methods, hand hoeing, fluchioralin and pendimethalin effectively reduced density and dr\- matter of weeds and recorded increased protein and gum content compared to unweeded control The reduced crop weed competition under hand hoeing, fluchioralin and pendimethalin tended to improve various growth parameters, \ield components and yield. Hand hoeing recorded higher seed, haulm and biological >ield which was higher b>' 56.48, 50.84 and 52.10 per cent over unweeded control, respectively. The corresponding increase with fluchioralin and pendimethalin were to the order of 55.36, 48.34, 50.28 and 51.24, 44.65, 46.48 per cent. respectively over unweeded control. * PG Scholar, Deptt. of Agronomy, RCA, Udaipur. ** Asst. Prof, Deptt. of Agronomy. RCA, Udaipur. The economic evaluation showed that the hand hoeing, fluchloralin and pendimethahn treatments were equally beneficial and these recorded significantly higher net returns (Rs. 20,553, Rs. 20,974 and Rs. 19.9)8 ha"') and B.C ratio (2.65, 2,90 and 2 70) compared to unweeded control (Rs. 11,952 ha"' and 1.92 B.C ratio). The combined economic evaluation of studied factor revealed the crop sown at plant density of 3.33 lac ha"' and weed control b\ fluchloralin proved most optimum. The combined use of these factors realized 19.19 q ha' seed. 49.44. q ha"' haulm and net returns of Rs. 23861 ha"' with B.C ratio of 3.37.en_US
