dc.description.abstractA livelihood comprises of capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living. It is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks, maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets, while not undermining the natural resource base. The case for promoting increased livestock production is pressing given the rapidly growing demand for animal products, and the global aim to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the world population living in object poverty, most of whom are dependent in part, on food and income derived from livestock. It provide over half the value of global agricultural output and one-third in developing countries. The main agricultural activity of farmers in India is the mixed crop-livestock system characterized with low inputs and outputs, making poor farmers suffer from decreasing sustainability. Livestock production makes an important contribution to economic development, rural livelihoods, poverty alleviation and meeting the fast growing demands for animal protein in developing countries. Livestock especially dairy is a key livelihood among the farming rural families and provides food for consumption, sources of income and capital and socio- cultural needs. That livestock rearing is a large opportunity to improve the livelihoods among poor farmers.en_US
