The goat belongs to family Bovidae and genus Capra. Domesticated goats (C. hircus} are descendents of the â pasangâ ? (C. aegagrus). The goat was one of the first animals to be domesticated by man. Origin of the Indian goat breeds is not clearly known and is believed to have been derived from wild goats which inhabited the Asian mountains in antiquity. Signs of their domestication were found in excavations of Neolithic period dating from 7,000 BC (Allchin, 1969; Mowlem, 1988).
