Abstract
An experiment was conducted to study the growth performance and the metabolizability of nutrients upon supplementation of L-Threonine in broiler diet. Four hundred day old commercial broiler chicks were assigned randomly into four groups such that each group had one hundred chicks with ten replicates of ten chicks in each replicate. Growth trial for the period of 42 days followed by a metabolic trial during penultimate three days of experiment was conducted. Broiler diet based on corn soybean with CP concentration as per standard specification served as control (T1), while T2, T3 and T4 with CP reduced by 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 units respectively served as experimental rations. The experimental rations were supplemented with L-Threonine at 0.86% (pre starter), 0.80% (starter) and 0.77% (finisher) to maintain the concentration of the limiting amino acid as par with that of control. The study indicated a significant difference in body weight gain (P<0.05), feed intake (P<0.05), FCR (P<0.05) among the treatment groups. The metabolizability of DM, OM, CP, CF and NFE remained non significant whereas, metabolizability of EE was significantly (P<0.05) different among treatment groups. There mortality was nil in all groups irrespective of the dietary regime allotted . Based on the results it indicated that supplementation of L-Threonine in low protein diets had positive effects on birds performance but was limited to the level of protein reduction. From the study, it can be concluded that one can reduce CP content up to 1.0 unit in the commercial broiler diet without compromising the birds performance.
