Abstract
India is endowed with huge and diverse livestock population and
the livestock production forms an integral part of agricultural sector.
Participation of large number of farmers with very small land holdings
and few animals per family characterize the animal husbandry sector in
India. India has 222 million cattle, 95 million buffaloes, 124 million
goats, 59 million sheep and 843 million poultry (FAO, 2004).
