A study was designed to assess a panel of ten microsatellite markers to determine parentage in four representative pedigree breeds of dogs - the Dalmatian, Dachshund, Labrador Retriever and Shih-Tzu. The microsatellite loci of interest were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and the resulting augmented products were run on a genetic analyser. Allele sizes, analysed with the help of a gene mapping software, were measured and compared, to determine similarities between the progeny and their putative parents. Conclusively, the microsatellites were found to be a reliable molecular tool in parent- age analysis due to its uniform distribution throughout the genome.en_US
