Abstract
The present study was carried out to investigate the water, soil quality, plankton and
health status of eight selected Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp ponds in Ankola, Uttara
Kannada district of Karnataka over a culture period. Physico-chemical parameters of soil
and water were analysed by standard methods. The study was conducted during the period
of March-June (P1 and P2); July-October (P3, P4, P5, P6 and P7); September-November
(P8). The results showed that some parameters with slight deviation compared with the
optimal water quality values. Soil quality and pond bottom soil processes, as well as the
association between ponds soil and water, are important for fish or shrimp growth. Sediment
and water quality play an important part in enhancing the pond's overall production.
The water quality parameters namely temperature, pH, alkalinity, salinity, DO, BOD,
TSS, TDS, NH3-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO4-P, SiO3-Si were found to vary from 27-35° C, 6.8-
9.3, 22-118 ppm, 0-35 PSU, 4.07-13.83 mg/l, 0.81-13.83 mg/l, 0.006-0.21 g/l, 0.15-67.04
g/l, 0.12-56.01 μg-at/l, 0.09-50.09 μg-at/l, 0.06-66.15 μg-at/l, 0.17-13.14 μg-at/l,
0.83-231.23 μg-at/l respectively. The soil parameters comprising of temperature, pH,
Organic carbon and texture ranged from 27.4-35.5° C, 4.3-9.0, 0.07-1.38%, Sand: 48.41-
96.26%; Clay: 0.3-2.45%; Silt: 3.14-51.24% respectively. Zooplankton number varied from
1000-184000 Nos/m³. Results of health status analysis showed EHP positive in P3, P4 and
P7 due to poor pre-stocking management practices. By adopting better management
practices, the production could be increased. Thus, with the ideal range of soil and water
parameters, there exists a great potential for brackishwater shrimp farming in the Uttara
Kannada district of Karnataka.
