Abstract
The present study on trace metal concentrations in water and sediment was conducted
at Veraval, Coast Gujarat. The purpose of study was to measure the increasing
concentration of metals in habor. The analysis of concentrations of trace metals (Cd, Cu
and Zn) at three different stations in Veraval harbour was done under MP-AES. Some
physico-chemical parameters such as pH, Salinity, Temperature, TSS and DO2 were
recorded in different seasons for eight months. The highest concentration of Cd in
sediment was observed in Post-monsoon season (0.72 ± 0.049) at Station-3 in November
and in water the levels of Cd was not detected. In case of Cu the highest concentration in
sediment recorded in Post-monsoon season (307.70 ± 41.81) at Station-3 in December Zn
had the highest concentration in sediment in Post-monsoon season (704.92 ± 176.2) at
Station-3 in December. The concentration of Cu in water was highest in Pre-monsoon
season (1.65 ± 0.282) at Station-2 in November. The concentration of Zn in water was
highest in Post-monsoon season (3.32 ± 1.060) at Station-2 in November. It was noted
that the highest concentration of all three metals Cd, Cu and Zn in sediment occurred at
Station-3 during Post-monsoon season and lowest at Station-1 during Monsoon season.
Thus, results revealed that seasonal variation in trace metal concentrations was observed
in all stations.
