Studies on micronutrients in crossbred cattle in and around industrial belt of Ranchi have been conducted in the Department of Medicine from 1997 to 1999 Heavy milching cows are prone to metabolic and deficiency diseases because there is continuous drainage of nutrients through milk and its excessive requirements for maintaining pregnancy. The mineral mixture available in the local market are not fulfilling the requirement of copper, iron, zinc and manganese as they are consisting very low concentration of micronutrients specially copper, iron, zinc and manganese. As a result the deficiency disease due to deficiency of micronutrients is widely prevented in cross-bred cattle. In order to compare the findings with the clinical cases the level. of copper, iron, zinc and manganese in healthy cattle in different age groups was also estimated. 1) The normal level of serum copper in crossbred cattle of 0 to 6 (group I), 6 to 12 (group II), 12 to 24 months (group III) and 24 months onwards (group IV) were recorded 1.11 0.05, 1.28 0.03, 1.39 ± 0.02 and 1.34 0.03 ppm respectively. The highest value was observed in the age group of 12 to 24 months. The effect of age on serum copper level was found to be highly significant (P <0.01). 2) The normal level of serum iron in above age groups were observed 2.19 ±0.15, 2.56 ± 0.16, 3.05 ± 0.11 and 3.30 ±0.03 ppm respectively.
