Abstract
Livestock play a vital role in the agricultural and rural economics of
the developing world. Thyroid and adrenal gland play important role in
galactopoisis as well as in metabolism. The present experiment was conducted
on 12 Kosali cows divided into two groups - lactating and nonlactating stages
with 6 cows in each group. Thyroid and adrenal gland were collected from
Kosli cow of Rajnandgaon, and Durg districts of Chhattisgarh. Gross
morphological and biometrical parameters of right and left thyroid gland,
isthmus, right and left adrenal glands were recorded. Tissue samples were
processed and histoarchitectural observations and histomorphological
micrometry were made.
No difference in morphology and topography of thyroid and adrenal
glands were recorded in lactating and nonlactating stage. Recorded gross
biometrical parameter of thyroid and adrenal glands were comparatively
higher in lactating stage than nonlactating stage and was mostly
nonsignificant. Whereas, in right thyroid gland craniomiddle thickness,
craniodorsal thickness, mid ventral thickness mid central thickness and in left
thyroid glands middle width, caudal width craniomiddle thickness mid central
thickness was significant. Biometrical parameters revealed that right thyroid
gland was larger than left thyroid gland.
Histoarchitectural organization of thyroid and adrenal glands were
same in lactating and nonlactating stage. In thyroid glands in lactating stage
the percent of small follicles were more (75 %), whereas in nonlactating stage
percent of medium follicles were more (50 %). Ratio of large follicle and
small follicles were in between lactating and nonlactating stage were 1.0 : 4.0
and. 2.50 : 1.0 respectively. Diameter of large, medium and small follicles
were more in nonlactating stage in right and left lobes of thyroid gland and
was nonsignificant. Thyrocyte height was more and nonsignificant in lactating
stage. No apparent difference was seen in the distribution of parafollicular
cells in lactating and nonlactating stage. Isthmus of lactating glands showed
more parenchyma whereas in nonlactating glands it was more fibrous.
Adrenal capsule, zona glomerulus, zona fasciculate, zona reicularis and
medulla were comparatively thicker in lactating stage and was nonsignificant.
The recorded histoarchitectural observations of adrenal glands were slightly
higher in left adrenal gland than right adrenal gland in lactating stage.
Whereas, in nonlactating left adrenal gland no definite pattern were seen.
