Abstract
An investigation on ajwain was undertaken during rabi season in 2019-20 at Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, College of Horticulture, Bagalkote to study the performance of ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi L.) genotypes under northern dry zone of Karnataka. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications and sixteen treatments. All genotypes showed significant differences for all the characters studied. Wide variability existed among the genotypes for all the morphological and yield traits. Among the sixteen genotypes studied, DAC-5 took minimum days to germination (11.00 days) and GA-1 showed a maximum plant height (111.20 cm). AA-93 took minimum days to 50 per cent flowering (86 days) and it showed maximum number of flowers per umbel (304.10). Genotype AA-1 recorded maximum number of branches (18.20), number of umbels per plant (213), number of umbellates per umbel (15.33), number of seeds per umbel (226.88), seed yield per plant (10.99 g), seed yield 4.14 q/ha, harvest index (30.29%) and maximum test weight (1.67 g). The minimum days to maturity was found in AA-93 (131). With respect to oleoresin content, DAC-5 recorded the highest oleoresin content (7.15%) and the maximum essential oil content was found in AA-1 (2.33%). In the correlation studies seed yield had highly significant and positive association with number of umbels per plant (0.975), harvest index (0.882), number of branches (0.623), test weight (0.531), number of flowers per umbel (0.511) and number of seeds per umbel (0.457). Among the 16 genotypes screened, none of the genotypes showed immune reaction to stem fly. However, the genotype AA-1 and AA-93 showed resistance and remaining genotypes (AA-2, GA-1, AL-3, Lam selection-1, LTA-26, DAC-1, DAC-2, DAC-3, DAC-4, DAC-5, DAC-6, DAC-7, AL-5 and AL-4) showed moderately resistance to stem fly. Among the genotypes evaluated AA-1 and AA-93 were suitable to grow under northern dry zone of Karnataka based on growth and yield attributes.
