Abstract
Toda buffaloes are native of the Nilagiris of Tamil Nadu and they are being bred and reared by the Toda tribe of the locality, They are semi-wild, domesticated and art: maintained for milk and milk bye-products. They are ash grey in colour and have a thick growth of hair like mane along the crest of neck, bump and back, giving a bison-like appearance They have an affinity to swampy areas and yet they have been classified by Ross Cock rill (1981 ) under river type based upon their phenotypic appearance, especially the shape of horns.
