Abstract
Irrigated agriculture has contributed for improving production and productivity in conjunction with other agronomic measure in most parts of the country. The precise application of water can be achieved by using water saving techniques like drip irrigation. It not only save water for future development, but also improve yields. The efficiency of drip irrigation system is a function of appropriate design. Appropriate design of drip irrigation system can help the farmers to bring more area under irrigation. The aim of present study was to develop a computerized software and design charts for design of economical drip irrigation systems in hilly terraced land. A user friendly computer software was developed in programming language VISUAL BASIC (Version 6.0).The method of complete enumeration was used to find the optimum sizes of sub-main and latreral pipe lines, dripper along with other useful information. The developed software helps in providing useful information in the design and optimization of drip irrigation system for hilly terraced land. Software requires only few input data and it can calculate large number of data output for the design of drip system for small as well as large area of land software is tested and found to be satisfactory Due to complexity of numerical method the design charts were developed for three slopes viz. 10, 30 and 40 percent and the riser height for these slopes was taken as 1.5 m. The shape factors considered in the development of design charts were 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5. The design chart was developed for 5 and 10 numbers of terraces separately .The required data was generated by using developed software and was plotted using the software, ORIGIN. With the help of these design charts drip irrigation system can be designed in minimum time and more accurately than traditional approach. These design charts can be used by the field engineers / scientist and related stake holders for the analysis and design of sub-mains for the hilly terraced land. Using the developed software the total cost of drip irrigation system was determined. The cost of installation of drip irrigation system for fruit crops ranged between Rs. 9460 and Rs. 38250 for 200 to 4000 square meter trapezoidal shaped hilly terraced land. However, total cost of the system for vegetable crops varied from Rs. 11060 to Rs. 84720 for the above size of terraced land.
