Abstract
Field experiment was conducted during summer season of 1982 at the College Farm of Gujarat Agricultural University, Naysari on 'heavy clayey' soil to study the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on the yield and yield attributing characters of hybrid maize (var. Ganga Safed-2). Eighteen treatment combinations consisting of three levels of nitrogen viz., 60, 120 and 180 kg/ha, three levels of phosphorus viz., 0, 30 and 60 kg/ha and two levels of potash viz., 0 and 60 kg/ha were tried in randomized block design with four replications. Application of 120 kg N/ha significantly increased the plant height, length and girth of cob, number of grains per cob and grain yield per cob. This reflected in marked effect on increasing grain yield of maize. Application of 60 kg P205/ha increased significantly the plant height, length of cob, number of grains per cob and grain yield per cob which resulted into higher stover anct grain yield. Potash application j 60 kg K20/ha significantly increased the number of grains per cob, grain yield per cob and stover as well as grain yield. From the economic point of view the nighest net return of Rs. 3910/ha was obtained. by application of 180 kg N + 6U kg p 2 0 5 + 60 ig K20 followed by 120 kg N + bu icg P 2 0 5 + 60 kg K 2 0 (Rs. 3338/ha) but the marginal return per rupee investment was lower i.e., 1:1.77 as compared to 1:2.14 in 120 kg N/ha.
