Abstract
A study on effectiveness of delivering farm advisory services by public and private extension systems was done in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. KVK, Ri-Bhoi, Umsning block as public extension organization and RRTC, Umran block as private extension organization were selected randomly for the study. Using ex post facto research design, data were collected from a random sample of 120 farmers and 20 extension officials through personnel interview and secondary data sources. For effectiveness in delivering the farm advisory services, ‘change in awareness’ of respondents was perceived as most important factor. Overall perceived effectiveness of delivering FAS for KVK, RiBhoi was found more effective than RRTC. Respondents’ perceived degree of preference was higher for KVK services for agriculture/ horticulture inputs & post-harvest activities. For crop advisory/ technical guidance & livestock services preference was RRTC. The mean score for extent of utilization of the farm advisory services for RRTC was 35.26 and for KVK it was 27.05. The major strengths of KVK were the quality of personnel and for RRTC was its brand name. Finance for extension activities and multiple responsibilities were the most frequently experienced constraints expressed by officials of KVK and RRTC. Both public and private organisations have their own strengths and there is need to converge their strengths for overall development of farming community.
