Abstract
Stray dog population in India is currently estimated to be 30 million and is increasing day by day With the result India gets dubious distinction of being the “stray d0g’s paradise”. Data have shown that one dog, left to breed freely, could be responsible for 67,000 offspring’s over six years. The WHO indicates that these stray dogs’ pose significant human health risk and recommends that all efforts should be made to reduce dog population density. The issue of how best to reduce the numbers of surplus/homeless pets is complex and multifaceted and involves ethical, historical, and political, as well as scientific considerations. Controlling reproduction of dogs remains critically important since this strategy is proactive rather than reactive: in other words, addressing the welfare of surplus pets begins by not allowing the surplus to develop in the first place.
