Abstract
88 ABSTRACT The Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of elements like sensor nodes which detect environmental events and then send them to sink nodes. These sink nodes are assigned the task of processing these events. Wireless Sensor Networks possess challenging design issues in Communication range, Energy constrained operation, processing power and Memory constraints, Bandwidth constrained links, Dynamic network topologies and Network traffic patterns. These different types of networks are largely dictated by application requirements and are thus, characterized by several resource constraints such as available energy, computational and communication capabilities. Routing is one of the significant considerations in design of WSNs, especially when it comes to severe energy constraints. Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) plays an important role in monitoring applications such as the ones which are environment-oriented, traffic managing etc. Since a WSN can undergo alterations in time, a protocol that is able to adapt to environmental conditions can increase network lifetime. The Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing algorithm is designed for ad hoc mobile networks. This is an on demand algorithm which builds routes between nodes only as desired by source nodes. It maintains these routes as long as they are needed by the sources. Ad hoc On Demand Vector faces certain disadvantages like the degradation of network lifetime, high setup delay etc. The network lifetime is neglected due to the selection of shortest path. The nodes’ energy along these routes is consumed quickly and may cause the topology partitioned. Thus in this research work the main focus is to create a modified routing protocol which uses an optimal path strategy to conserve the energy of nodes. The study of residual battery in the modified protocol is done in order to observe the energy conserved. We present the performance study of modified routing protocol through parameters like packet delivery ratio, average jitter, packet loss and throughput. The impact of network size increment will be studied through the implementation. The WSN platform I will be working on is Sensenuts which contain different senor modules and different communication gateway modules for Wireless sensor network setup and IoT applications. Sensenuts make use of IEEE 802.15.4 which can be deployed on parameters like low bandwidth requirement, low range, on-off behaviour and low battery consumption.
