Abstract
Assessment of risk factors of breast cancer among patients residing in Udaipur city The present study was undertaken with the objective to study the modifiable and non modifiable risk factors and to assess the relationship between dietary factors and prevalence of breast cancer in the selected women patients. The study was conducted in Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) of Udaipur city. A sample of 80 histopathologically confirmed female breast cancer patients were selected. Interview schedule was developed and pretested for collecting information regarding background profile, modifiable and non modifiable risk factors associated with breast cancer of the respondents. In modifiable risk factors anthropometric indices, blood pressure and dietary history was assessed and in non modifiable risk factors information regarding heredity and physiological factors was assessed. The results revealed that according to BMI and blood pressure classification 54 per cent respondents were overweight and obese and 35 per cent respondents were suffering from hypertension which are the modifiable risk factor associated with breast cancer. In dietary history food consumption pattern of the respondents was studied and it showed that only 63.75 per cent consuming fruits whereas 36.25 per cent respondents were not at all consuming fruits. In nuts and oil seeds about 60 per cent of the respondents were not consuming almonds, cashew nuts and pista and all of the respondents were not consuming flax seeds which is essential for preventing breast cancer. Higher consumption of saturated fats was seen among 88.75 per cent of the respondents daily in form of ghee. The consumption of unsaturated fats was lower by the respondents which is the one of the most important risk factor of breast cancer in diet. Nearly 22.5 per cent respondents had history of abortions, 2.5 per cent respondents showed history of nulliparity, 97.5 per cent performed breast feeding, 22.5 per cent respondents had history of oral contraceptive pills usage, 27.5 per cent respondents had early age at menarche, 12.5 per cent respondents had history of irregular menstrual cycle, 11.25 per cent respondents had late age at first full term pregnancy and 5 per cent respondents had family history of breast cancer. These were commonly seen among the respondents which are the non modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. Thus, it can be concluded from the study that presence of obesity, less consumption of green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts & oil seeds, lifestyle factors and higher consumption of saturated fats. Along with these the physiological factors like history of abortions, nulliparity, oral contraceptive pills usage, early age at menarche, irregular menstrual cycle, late age at first full term pregnancy and family history all these might have contributed in the occurrence of the disease amongst the selected patients.
