Abstract
Assessment of planktonic diversity and certain water quality
parameters of Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam Banswara, Rajasthan
in relation to its fisheries potential
Jay Prakash Yadav* Dr. B. K. Sharma The present study deals with the Assessment of planktonic diversity and
certain water quality parameters of Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam Banswara,
Rajasthan in relation to its fisheries potential. The outcome of the present study
from planktonic diversity of Mahi Dam, a total 19 species of phytoplankton was
noticed. Out of 19 species of phytoplankton, 6 were from Cyanophyceae, 7 were from
Chlorophyceae, 5 were from Bacillariophyceae and 1 belonged fromEuglenophyceae
from this Dam. In the present study, the observed phytoplankton ranking in order of:
Cyanophyceae>Bacillariophyceae>Chlorophyceae>Euglenophyceae. A total 15
species of zooplanktonwere noticed.Out of these 15 genera, 4 were from protozoa, 4
from Rotifera, 4 from copepod, 3 belonged toCladocera group from this Dam. In the
present study, the observed zooplankton ranking was in orderof
Cladocera>Copepoda>Rotifera> Protozoa> other. Qualitative and quantitative
analysis of planktonic resource also revealed the moderate productivity of this Dam.
The average EC of Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam was found to be 0.42 m S cm-1.
Based on MEI the predicated fish production from Mahi Bajaj Sagar in 1326 metric
tons per year.
Water quality parameters viz., air and water temperature,pH,depth of visibility,
dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, carbonate and by carbonate alkalinity, EC,
TDS, orthophosphate, and nitrate nitrogen were observed throughout the study period
and indicate Mahi Bajaj Sagar is alkaline and moderately hard water body. The water
quality and planktonic parameters indicated the suitability of Mahi Bajaj Sagar for
fishery purpose. The observed physico-chemical and planktonic parameters of Mahi
Bajaj Sagar were fairly moderate.
